Choice of Speed Camera Detector

Apologies to our lady friends for my tongue in cheek sub-title.  But there is an issue here that I would welcome advice on.  My wife has accumulated 6 speeding points in a short period from cameras catching her at 36-38 in a 30 limit.  As a result, she has become a worse driver - spending more time fixated by the speedo than looking where she is going.  Also, when driving at the limit, she is now being constantly intimidated by "tailgaters" - you know them, the single cell, mouth-breathing, organisms that try to push decent folks into speeding.

I'm thinking of buying her a simple detector, such as a Road Angel Compact.  But before I do, there are a few issues that worry me.  These are (in my experience) particularly female quirks (he says respectfully!;).  For example:-

Given the irresistable temptation for scum to break into the car to steal a shiny toy on display, I would imagine you need to hide it away when parked, then reconnect before setting off.  Is that practicable and easy?  I just can't imagine madame fiddling around with a handful of wires and adaptors etc.  I don't want to buy something that ends up living in the glove compartment!

Madame's problem (which I'm starting to think is government policy) has been knowing what the speed limit is at any moment on minor roads where the signs are not evident (normally just before a camera site).  Will a good detector reliably show the limits in real time and give a warning of excessive speed?

Incidentally, what do you do about tailgaters??

Any recommendations?

Many thanks

Keep gradually slowing down until they get the message or overtake. Under no circumstances be tempted to brake test them...

Keep gradually slowing down until they get the message

Absolutely, works brilliantly, every time they come up yer ass  :0  slow down gradually to `say` 15mph in a 30, as soon as they back off speed up to 30 again

Nothing at all.

Do the speed you wish to do is my advice and ignore them.

Those same single cell organisms are just as likely to overtake, block you off and want to strangle you if you start slowing down and speeding up just to make a point.

It's not the advice i would give to a woman driving on her own anyway.I would just suggest you pull over if someone is worrying you that much and let them pass when you can.

Oh dear,  I hope this doesn't get silly ("Fat chance", says the Chairman).  Thanks for your comments on tailgating, but I'd really welcome advice on camera/laser detectors.

Thanks

tom tom sat nav does speed scammeras aswell that way she can be driving to her destination and avoid getting caught by money grabbing cameras easy to use

Seriously though, SWMBO uses the road angel navigator, its taking a while for her to get used to it, but IMO its simple.

Driving along you get plenty of warning of cameras and the speed limit asscoiated with it, however these are only established sites. It does not do temporary speed traps

As a general rule of thumb on minor roads

Street lights = 30 mph

No lights & rural = 60 mph

If you're not sure go at 30.

It may seem slow but you've got a much greater chance of not killing or seriously injuring a pedestrian.

'Er Indoors has got a Navigator as well and whilst it is good when you get used to it, it does take quite a bit of learning I thought. I have one of the orginal Road Angel's, now called a Classis, not sure if you can still get them, but I think it is superb. So easy to use and install, plus it is all black and small so it passes most people by especially if you hide it behing the huge A pillar most modern cars seem to have.

SWMBO has a Road Angel Compact (VW has factory sat nav ) and it works very well, it highlights the actual speed limit on one side and your speed on the other so you just make sure you're only doing the same or less - her Golf's speedo says 70 when it's really only doing 64 so it also means you can speed up a bit  ;)  :p  :D

good luck. my (er indoors) cant grasp the fact that it might be handy to keep her mobile with her in the car, she seems to think its just for chinwagging with friends rather than the unlikely scenario of a flat tyre or a breakdown  ???

if i bought her a camera detector i just know it would end up stuffed in the glovebox  ;)

I can also recommend the Talex device. Simply plugs into cigarette lighter socket. You just unplug and take it with you - plus, you can use it in any car you want to drive. It gives your true speed and talks to you warning of fixed camera and mobile sites. It's about the size of an electric shaver, but much lighter.

They supply the software disk at a small extra cost to update from the Talex website which they advise every week or two.

My son has 9 points so we got one for him. My Westfield speedo is in a world of it's own so I'm getting one for that as well. Costs about £80.00 I think.
