black box red TO+ ON COIL , BLACK TO EARTH , VIOLET TO - ON COIL

The red to the black box really needs to be connected to the ignition switch switched positive feed not the coil positive if the coil is un-balasted.

I THINK THE RESISTOR & THE 12 V INPUT PLUS THE RED TO THE BLACK BOX ARE ALL ON THE + TERM ON THE COIL COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM

Yes, the box is only getting 9 volts if it's wired in after the balast resistor (at the coil), the balast resistor is dropping the ignition switched 12 volt supply to the 9 volts, the black box needs 12 volts to work properly.

Re wire the red feed wire to the black box into a switched 12 volt positive supply, you should be able to pick one of these feeds (white wires) from the fuse box.

cannot get the lumenition to work at all ,so it looks like i will be going beck to points just to enjoy the car this year
