Tubs Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 How about a Honda CRX Mk1/11. Should be able to get a reasonable 16v for that money or even a high milage VT with the VTEC engine. Mmmmmm VTEC. Oh, and Honda reliability too. Tubs Quote
nikpro Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Used to have a Pug 1.6 roadcar and a 1.9 that was all prepped up for the scholarship. Both great drivers cars but flimsy as hell (except the engines which are bullet proof) The full cage in the 1.9 made a hell of a difference as did a new rear axle and solid mounts; the rear axles tend to seize. The cams in the 1.9 are very radical for a road car and this causes the flap in the airflow meter to pulsate with the cam overlap causing the famous Pug Kangaroo symptom - if ever you drive one you will find it almost impossible to drive smoothly on a light throttle. An ectek valve helps but I ended up fitting bike carbs to the engine (manifold by Bog Brothers). They make an excellent track car an the 8v engine better for track use as it's got more torque lower down. Best sources of Info are: Skip Brown Puma Racing Engines Numerous info on Pug scholarship website with a whole manner of rally prep companies - not much interest here I wouldn't of thought with all the 'Roundy,Roundy' boys on this website! DanB Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 I had a 1.6 205 GTi which I fitted with Koni adjustables, 285mm discs and 4 pot brakes and a 1.9 rear beam. Apart from a water hose bursting, it was pleasantly reliable despite doing 15,000 miles a year. The Konis were too stiff really, but on the right road in the right mood, it was an absolute hoot. True, the lift-off oversteer could be alarming if you did something daft, but with a quick rack I never had any slides I couldn't correct in time (albeit sometimes only just). Not a car to take liberties with, but beautiful if you wanted to drive it on the throttle and cross-country there wasn't much to beat it. Had to sell it eventually to buy a tow car - a Passat TDi. Still miss me little Pug... Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 I hillclimbed a 205 (1.7 8v it was with TBs, 8 injectors, everything you could wish for and 200bhp) It was a superb car even driving to/from events. Sold now though to buy the Westie! http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/vickeryhome/205.htm Loads of bits available and good prices. I fear there are very few good ones around now as most have been thrashed. I still think they look great (better than a Golf and I had two of those as well) Nice car Martyn I've robbed a couple of photos for Website Members cars hope u don't mind! Buzz Quote
Robandcolin Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Had the same dilemma recently over a Pug GTI or the Golf Mk2 16v. I bought a 1991 MK2 16v in white (80's) for a grand its got lowered suspension which i'm putting back to standard as its so freekin hard. The Body is immaculate I keep getting people in petrol stations commenting on it. It's done 150k and is as tight as a drum you can't say that of any 205. The best thing about these cars is the price of parts they are proper cheap if you know where to look. And I absolutly Love it. Rob Quote
rich101 Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Uno Turbo! If you can find a good one, I've had a few and have needed to rebuild the sills/floors on all of them! Engines are pretty bullet proof thou, and are easy and cheap to tune up, hitting 60 in 6s is fairly achieveable. Cheap insurance and road tax. Not too good on corners, but you've the westie for that!!! Quote
