detailer Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Golf GTI 16V the car mate. Tough as old boots! Pugs a bit fragile like renault 5 gt turbos. Don't see many of those things around these days Quote
slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 5GT Turbo's are shocking for reliabiltiy great for cheap power when they are running like Quote
Boomy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Maybe you should delete this topic and repost it with the heading "i am going to get a 205 gti" Quote
JeffC Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Slip... will have a look.. nee probs... if u after a cheap run abooooot.. ive taken a pug 306 lx turbo diesel in px this week , 98 R facelift model , 80k 1 owner 5 dr , few scrapes round the body came in at a grand T&T. Quote
slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Cheers Jeff but I think I am going to run Funbobbs 406 Diesel estate for a while it only owes him £300 so it's a bargain and with the money left over I'm going to fit a Red Top. Whats that love ? the bathroom you say Oh yeh forgot about that looks the spare funds are going back into the house Quote
dern Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Why don't you like it ? I hate the way it scrabbles around corners like a puppy on shiny lino trying to attack your slippers. That's fwd hot hatches for you though. Much better car than the pug though. We had 2 pugs, a 1.6 and a 1.9. 1.9 was mega-reliable so bought the wife a 1.6 which was the 2nd most unreliable car I've ever had and frankly I have more spare time now I have children than when I didn't but had a 205 to look after. Head gasket went, wouldn't idle, all the laquer peeled off the roof, smelt of petrol etc etc. The 1.9 was very reliable and tried to kill you at every opportunity. It's set up with loads of lift off oversteer which in my opinion is a ****e idea for a daily and it's lethal. Golf is much better but slightly irritating in that you have to wring its neck. Mine has done 166k miles and still pulls like a train. Mark Quote
cidersurfer Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Had both. Can't believe nobodys mentioned the Pugs electrics, mine was sh#te. It went well though, but not as well as my 8V Golf (Tim Styles Racing engine), you could change lanes with the torque steer in that! Mk 2 Golf was virtually bullet proof but I think you'll be hard pushed to find a decent unmodded one now. Both great cars in their day and now both outperformed by a diesel Mondeo Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Had both in my 20's Mk1 & 2 GTi's,a 1900 205 and for me both were great cars but the golf edged it for me on performance & handling but for looks... 205 everytime. Then I discovered 'rice burners'....Starion turbos F.A.F!! Buzz Quote
Marty Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I hillclimbed a 205 (1.7 8v it was with TBs, 8 injectors, everything you could wish for and 200bhp) It was a superb car even driving to/from events. Sold now though to buy the Westie! http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/vickeryhome/205.htm Loads of bits available and good prices. I fear there are very few good ones around now as most have been thrashed. I still think they look great (better than a Golf and I had two of those as well) Quote
Karl Woolf Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I went from a 205 1.6 to a 1.9 then mk2 aste gte 16v (sorted the suspension and brakes) then a starion hi Buzz the 205 was a great motor as long as you didn`t lift but at the very limit it would ultimatley oversteer (parked it on a roundabout in the wet) Knocks your confidence for on the limit driving Unfortunatley the stiffened chassis caused a crack up the inner wing of the astra so wouldn`t recommend one of those either Quote
dern Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 the 205 was a great motor as long as you didn`t lift but at the very limit it would ultimatley oversteer (parked it on a roundabout in the wet) Knocks your confidence for on the limit driving Had mine go sideways at 60 on a bend. Fortunately it was a left hander and I just had room to catch it and nothing was coming the other way Then I lifted at 5mph turning around in a car park on snow which it turned out was on ice and slammed the back into a curb which bent the rear wheel under the car and snapped the disc in half. £1500 insurance claim. Bit too exciting for me thanks. Quote
slippy Posted January 22, 2006 Author Posted January 22, 2006 Common sense, and a talking to from my dad, has prevailed and I am intending to sell my current tin top and run a mates 406 Diesel for a while and with the left over cash I'm going to do the bathroom exciting stuff or what Quote
JonnyBoy Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I'm on the shop for a ZX TD Volcane at the moment.. bit more excitement than a 406 I hope and not much extra to spend either!, although I am trying to persuade my GF's boss to sell me his '96 Golf GTi for £1000 (fingers crossed). I gave up the search for a 205 unsuccessfull! Quote
kik1.6se Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Peugeot 106 rallye. It's only a 1.3, but it's 100bhp at 7400rpm and it only weighs about 820kg's. It's greart fun to drive and the engine is really rev happy. I've had mine almost 5 years now and get a kick from driving it on a decent bit of country lane. It's also faily cheap to insure, if i'm careful I can get 45mpg out of it. Kirk Quote
