slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I'm thinking of a 205 GTI but as discussed previous build quality is an issue so what do people reckon is the best most pratical GTI out there for £1500 big ones ? Quote
Eccentric_Rich Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 MK2 Golf - I don't think there are any decent 205 GTI's around anymore, not for 1500 quid anyway. Richard. Quote
slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 I fear you are right but I don't really fancy a golf although it's probably the most sensible option Quote
dern Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I've got a 16v mk2 golf and imo it's a better car than the 205 Gtis (had a 1.6 and a 1.9) but frankly unless you like fwd roller skates they're all much of a muchness and I'm getting rid of the golf when an opportunity arises. Regards, Mark Quote
wrightster Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 sorry its gotta be a golf again , had 3 mk2 gti's and 1 pug 1.6 gti - a golf please every time Quote
JeffC Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 would depend on what your plans are for it...no doubt the golf is much better built car than the peugeot.. but as a cheap thrash car 205 gti would be me , if you could find a decent one and graft a MI 16 engine into one.. you have to spend some serious money on a golf to make them go anything like... spent many a happy year been chased by golf gtis in my pug days and they never got close... slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Afternoon Jeff Love 205's always have but just have nightmares about head gaskets going bang etc, I currently have a very sensible very relaible and sound Audi A4 that bores that fooking A*** off me. If you hear or see any coming up let me know what are the things to look out for ? Quote
Phil. S Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I've had both a Mk2 Golf GTi 16v and a 1.9 205GTI, but I only used the latter on track. The Golf was fantastic and an easier car to live with. It felt a bit better built, it was bigger and quieter on long journeys. The Golf also has a better image, and is slightly more grown up. But it's heavier, and they're more expensive. Both cars are excellent, and make it hard to drive at sensible speeds along country roads. I suspect the Golf might be a bit more forgiving on track. Lift just a little bit with the Pug and the back will overtake the front. Tough choice, but if I were to get another hot hatch for the track I think I would pay a little extra and get the Golf. Close call though. Quote
slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 It's intended to be my daily drive Quote
Boomy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 What about the Pug 306 GTi/XSi, they are cheap enough now.Or even a 309 GTi if you can find one. Quote
slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 A 309 is a 205 boot I'd never live it down I don't think, not sure I could get a 306 GTI for £1500 Quote
JeffC Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 slip... I used to have a garage years ago and started doing a lot of pug mods, converted loads into 16v.. have to say on a 1.9 8v Ive never done a head gasket.. a drive down the road will reveal most pug probs... gear synchros drop link arms ball joints rear axel bushes etc etc. Quote
slippy Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 If I do line one up would you ind giving it a once over ? Obviously I cover your expenses well a few pints at the next meet Quote
