Darrell O'Neill Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 OK, here goes. Im looking to do as many local sprint events and trackdays as possible this year, but my problem is transportation Ive been looking now for a few months for a cheap (£400-£500) yet good trailer to take the westie on. So far all Ive seen is a few trailers which seem to either have been used by the local wurzels on their farms or built by the local pikey's from parts nicked from the wurzels After visiting the autosport show and talking to a few of the companies there im now considering new... Willwood/PRG and Brian James all seem to quote rougthly the same kinda price.. 1K + the VAT for a new 11 x 5.5ft lightweight twin axel trailer now, second hand prices for this type of trailer seems to me to be anything around the £800-£1000 mark for a reasonable condition trailer Making it a reasonabably sensible investment. Has anyone else looked into this/had experience, opinions would be appriecated. Cheers Darrell Quote
nikpro Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I just sold a PRG Mini sport which had a bed size of 5'5" by 11' and I have to say it was an excellent trailer. The reason I sold it was that it was an extremely tight fit to get my standard car on it and was therefore a pain to load. Have just ordered a Woodford widebody at 5'10" x 12'. Would seriously think about bed size only being 5'5" as I reckon I would really struggle if I went to a wide front susp. set up. Quote
Bananaman Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 All depends if you need to get the car and trailer in the garage or if you ca leave the trailer out (Make sure its VERY secure & insured, theres too many trailers go missing I know from bitter experience!!! As nikpro says 12'x5'7-10" will be a good size. Quote
jeff oakley Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I know many on here will laugh but I made my own. I bought a twin axle caravan chassis which is an alco with all the proper brakes hitch everything. Then I cut it to length and welded a frame on the top to take alloy plate. It takes the westfield and fits inside a single garage door and cost all in about £350. It looks smart and as others have witnessed it tows at ludicrously high speeds (ok I forgot it was there) and is unlikely to get stolen as there is not really a resale value for self built. If you buy a branded unit be prepared to lock it away at all times as the pikeys will have it away before you can say "tarmac your drive". It is amazing how a little paint will make a scabby trailer look good. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I've used a twin axle PRG Sport for 5 years - fits in garage no problem, well made no problems, except for an odd tyre blow-out last year which can happen anytime Quote
rickslack Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I bought a fountain trailer a couple of years ago and its been excellent. Top quality bit of kit trailers Quote
Darrell O'Neill Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 Thanks for the input guys. Glad I did'nt order the 5.5ft one then Quote
Scottish Bloke Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Bought a Woodford Trailer start of last year. It has been excellent. Car fits on snug and tows a dream. Single axle easy to shove around when unhitched. Deal with Craig, I spoke to him at Autosport, might do some discount?? They are based in Daventry Rich Quote
adhawkins Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 One thing to consider about bed width is whether you're ever likely to go wide track. Mine is tight on a 5'6" bed (depends on what wheels / tyres I have fitted) so I reckon a 6'1" is a better bet for me. Andy Quote
a4drk Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Would seriously think about bed size only being 5'5" as I reckon I would really struggle if I went to a wide front susp. set up. I've just bought a Brian James Minno I believe that is 5 foot 5 wide? I havent had the Westie out the garage yet & tried it on the trailer...... as its always raining Will my factory standard Megablade fit on that ? It has 185/60/13 tyres..... if that means anything to the width of the front suspension..... David Quote
a4drk Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Just Checkout W/F's website & BJ's Westfield Megablade is 3340mm long x 1610mm wide Brian James Minno - Bed Size is 3353 x 1651mm 40mm (20mm either side) Tighter than a camels erse in a sandstorm........ Quote
Blatman Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I have a wide body car and a narrow body car, both with wide track suspension. They both fit on a Minno, although there is very little spare room when the wide body car is on there. But it does go on, no worries. Worth noting though (and I hesitate to raise the offset question ) that the wheels on my wide car are 15x7 all round with a rear offset of ET22, and a front offset of ET31... assuming I've recalled the sizes of my spacers and the offset of my wheels correctly... I'm going to revisit the whole offset question again this weekend if I get time. I'm planning on taking pictures and everything on both a detachable arched wide car and a narrow car and measuring various offsets and tyre sizes. I may even write that article for the magazine... Al Yupright Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Your megablade will go on a minno ok. The front suspension is 50mm narrower than the rear each side. So things only start getting really tight (ie 20mm each side) around the rear wheels. Cheers, Al. Quote
