adamnreeves Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Hello Guys, quick question. I have spent hours in the garage tonight fitting my 7.5" diff. Had lots of problems basically because the diff housing was too big at the back left hand side, it was fowling on the chassis rail. I have removed a fair chunk of alloy material and now it is all in and torqued in the diff case pratically touches the chassis rail, is this a problem or not? Quote
Chasmon Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 FINE AS LONG AS YOU HAVE AROUND 3MM CLEARANCE AS PER MANUAL... Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 My diff is a 71/2 and had no problems fitting the diff will not move so should not be a problem as long as it is not touching as it will vibrate through the chassis but you would probably not notice post a picture so I can have a look. Is it underneath it is tight or up top? Here's mine now show me yours Quote
adamnreeves Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Now I am out the garage and had a nice hot drink and thought about it, I have decided to take the diff out again. It is the bottom left chassis rail that is practically touching. I am not bothering to take a photo as I cannot see by eye if it is touching or not, it is that close and obviously this is less than 3mm as Chasmon states (I missed that in the manual). I think for the sake of spending 2 hours not worth not doing it better is it? At least I can now mark properly where it is fowling and grind an extra 3-4mm. Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Good idea as diff out when the car is finished trust me Is not a nice experiance. Barry Quote

Kevin Wood Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I managed about 5mm of clearance, I'd guess. The diff will move on the bushes a little but not more than a mm or two, I would have thought. The other thing to check is that the diff can't move left / right and foul the chassis. I found there was a mm or two of space between the diff mountings and bushes, especially at the bottom, which I packed out with washers. I did manage to file some material off while the diff was more or less in situ but if you've not got the body on, fuel tank in, etc. then take it out. Saves potentially damaging the powder coat. There appears to be loads of thickness in the diff case on that corner so you should be able to make a bit of clearance without striking oil Kevin Quote

Barry Ashcroft Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Yes ! The factory V8's have the battery mounted on the bulkhead to the right of the diff. On mine I had a purpose made battery tray which is also the seatbelt cover and washer bottle mount which locates the battery right in the middle of the diff I had to do this because of the cross bracing bars to beef up the diff mounts. Bit of a pain to get to and because of the starter location makes it impossible to jump start. Although I have a socket wired to the battery mounted in the boot which allows me to connect the car to an optimate charger so it's always fullly charged. I also have a mother of an oddessy gel battery PC925 so tha helps. Barry Quote

Sounds about right, need all that space up front to squeeze the V8 in. I am in awe on how the hell you got a small block chevy in their, despite the battery being in the boot! Anyway, Barry I finally put the diff to rest last night, about 5mm clearance in the end. Here's the photo of the gap, sorry about size! Quote

adamnreeves Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 And the prize for the biggest photo goes to................................ Adam Mike Just showing of my 7.3 megapixel camera! I put on full resolution to ensure that the gap could be seen. In retrospect I do no think 7.3 million pixels are required to show a 5mm gap! Quote
