Chevy to T5 bellhousing, omg wot am I upto?

Perhaps if you said we could offer some advice!

I used the Tremec T500 I think my engine would smash a T5 to pieces.

The gearbox is about the same size as a R380 but the bellhousing is larger I used an alloy bellhousing from repower it is the smallest made.

Lots of pictures on my website under engine fitting.

It's a job I'm helping someone with at work, for his Cobra replica. He has a 450bhp small block Chevy and a T5 box that he needs to mate to it :p Now I know people that run 600bhp cossies on the T5 box that produce more torque than the V8 in question, so basically I'm after a bell housing to fit. After reading the link that Mike H gave me (thanks Mike) it looks like the options are a late 70's early 80's Jeep 151 "Iron Duke" bellhousing or a 86-89 Chevy Astrovan/GMC Safari bellhousing. Anymore info would be gratefully recieved :)

I think he'll brake it then he will need a new bellhousing when he has to fit a tremec.

And a clutch , slave cylinder etc better to get it right from the offing.

The yank T5 is not the same as he get over here

So you think the T5 gearbox wont take the power?

As Barry says there is more than one T5. I think you the one that you want is known as the T5 world class. I think the 5th Gear ratio gives you a clue, the world class one is 0.63. I think the cossie one  is not so step, i.e. the ratio is numerically higher.

I think it will be ok untill the day you give it some beans ( it will happen ) and the box will let go. It will be the weekest link.

As he thought about the prop??

I went to my local prop man saw some bloke there said I want a prop this long from this yoke (I bought from real steel) to a sierra diff. No problem I was told about £120 result.

When I dropped measurments and yoke off the guy who builds them said what horspower are you running 500 bhp I replied well the standard prop will be no good you need thicker tube stronger UJ's mine are from a truck propshaft cost £440

It aint as simple as chucking in a big engine yes it will work but not for long.

I built what some said can't and should'nt be built and I thrashed the nuts off it in the states (Ask Buzz look at my avatar 5500miles total driving in 5 weeks) with no real running in time on the project and did it break no! why because I built it right I researched the parts required to do the job and used the right parts first time.

Good luck with the build and I don't think you can compare a 600bhp cossie to a Chevy V8 it aint even the same league not even the same sport.

Ok Barry, thanks for your input, must admit when I look at the box sitting next to the chevy lump it does make me wonder ??? the prop will be modded from the malibu classic the engine came out of, it had an uprated auto in it, specifically designed for the power (which I'll advise him to use now) and a detroit locker diff. Oh well I'll see what I can talk him into, thanks again no doubt I'll keep you posted and maybe want some more advice :)

If he really wants to use the T5 then he ought to have a word with gearboxman.co.uk or Glebe about uprated gear sets and bearings.  But if he's got the room and doesn't mind the extra weight then (based on stuff I've read) then in terms of cost it may be better to go for another type of box IMO.

Keep us posted.

Mike :)
