Differential oil drain plug

Recommended Posts

Collected my diff oil drain plug from ford today and comes with no washer, which I questioned, and the response is no need for it.

Now call me predantic but the plug is ferrious as it is magnetic and the diff cover is alloy, surely for this I should use a washer, I understand that no pressure is involved in the diff as it has an air breather tube, but surely a use of a washer would stop the alloy corroding to the bolt head?

Am I being stupid, ott or what?

It's not a drain plug. Diffs don't have drain plugs 'cos in theory, you never need to drain them. It's a filler plug...

Oh, predantic as always!

It would be a drain plug if you went up a steep hill and you hadnt put one in.

Just making sure we're singing from the same page. As with many things Westfield (and engineering in particular) accuracy of description will make the difference between getting good advice and getting bad advice. Plus I have half an eye on your "new to Westfields" status and wanted to make sure that you aren't being led down the garden path by someone else who may also lack some experience with automotive parts...

Blatman: Surely the right response is

"I think you mean 'pedantic'"? :D

(Sorry Adam. I couldn't resist.)

You're right, it should have been. Trouble is, I keep getting customers through the damn door so I'm not paying as much attention as I should be :0:oops:

Still, Adam's only about a quarter of the way through the build manual. There's plenty of time yet :D

Adam,

No washer on the diff that came with my kit. No washer fitted after being sent away for a seal replacement either. Similarly, no washer on my second, Westfield fitted diff.

I am glad I scrolled down! Trying to be clever doesn't always yield the right results does it!

Yes I knew someone would notice (typo and I couldn't be bothered to edit it) and was surprised blatman didn't pick up on it!

Hi Adam,

No washer on my Sierra LSD and have never had any problems with any leakage in the last 4000 miles (and that includes a sprint).

Now I have actually got the plug in my possesions I can see that it has a type of flange removing the need for a washer and the plug is painted, so should be no problem with corrosion or leaks.

Thanks guys.
