Phil. S Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Here's an article on electric race cars and how terrible it is that the FIA is standing in the way of such developments. The FIA's attitude is certainly bad for the environment, and probably for the car manufacturers in F1, but can you imagine going to a race meeting to watch silent cars racing around a track? Not attractive if you ask me. Quote
Blatman Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 The FIA's attitude is certainly bad for the environment I thought that the FIA "bought" enough trees every year to negate the output of carbon emissions generated by F1. I'll need to check... Quote
Boomy Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 I watched a clip of an electric powered atom a few days ago (trying to find the link), it still did 0-60 in 3 seconds or there abouts, but....well, where's the fun in just hearing wind noise? Quote
Robandcolin Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 This Electric car thing really bugs me. Now correct me if I'm wrong but we have to make this electricity somehow it doesn't come from nowhere see we make it by burning oil the ommissions from these power stations is probably worse than us driving around in our cars. And the power source will run out at the same time as well so whats the point. Now cars that run on hydrogen thats a good idea. Rob Quote
neilb Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 well, where's the fun in just hearing wind noise I go out in the car to get away from that Quote

david.c Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 well, where's the fun in just hearing wind noise? Agreed.........you may as well go and watch the underground trains David Quote
Blatman Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Electricity generated by nuclear power doesn't use fossil fuels and add very little in the way of greenhouse gasses. Obviously spent fuel rods are a different hazard, but we will eventually learn what to do with them... And my FIA buying trees theory has been shot down in flames today as the Germans have discovered that newly planted forests may actually give off large amounts of methane (the second largest greenhouse gas after Carbon Dioxide), and that new forests possibly generate more greenhouse gasses than they take up... bl**** scientists Quote
Kevin Wood Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Also, generating electricity in the scale that a large power station does, even from fossil fuels, is MUCH cleaner than relieving the fossil fuels of their energy in a car engine. It would be nice to see some of F1's budget going into worthwhile research which might eventually filter down into cleaner cars for Joe bloggs rather than squeezing the last ounce of power out of a petrol engine that's crippled by strict regs and far removed from anything in use in production cars. Blatman Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 I agree. F1 could use methanol/ethanol (whatever it is they use) same as Indy cars if they were serious... Quote
