Do we have them in our cars does anyone know?

...It's common knowledge that airplanes have "black boxes" that record flight data so safety experts can reconstruct what went wrong after an accident. But few motorists are aware that their late-model cars contain similar devices - and that police and insurers might use the data against them...

The VDO speedo in your average Westfield will record speed at impact in a crash.

and will reset back to home position when you turn the ignition back on.

I know as my last one said 62mph (I was impressed if no one else was)

I'm fairly sure most ECU's can be interogated for basic information these days in the Police feel the need. I did also read that insurance companies in the event of a claim will have the ECU of cars that are popular in modifying circles checked for remaps these days as well...

I honestly had no idea, it was just an interesting article someone linked to so i was curious to know if it was common knowledge.

I seem to remember that Norwich Union ( I think) wanted to run trials of having a "black Box" in vehicles to be able to collect data and track where you are and when for insurance purposes.

If you drive and park in Mosside in manchester every day, then you're more likely to have your car nicked/broken into therefore they will increase your premium kind of thing. Dont know if anything came of it as a lot of people kicked off about it.

Sounds similar to the governments charge per mile scheme where they have a GPS recorder in your car so that they can charge you more for going on the motorway during rushour and less for using a B road at 3am!

They know where your car is at all times. And by knowing that you travelled on the motorway for 1 hour and did 93 miles, they will know you were speeding and therefore give you 3 more points and a fine!

Why dont they make cars out of the same material they make black boxes out of ?

I was involved in the trial fitments of these units. I believe they have been a success and a major drive on these units is expected this year.

Pay as you drive

I was also involved with a major car leasse company and installed thousands in to every day company cars you would never know the device was in there  ;)

Regards the NU black boxes - that is in trial for a pay-as-you-drive insurance.  They were aiming it at the younger market because it offers the chance of greatly reduced insurance premiums for safe youngsters.  Haven't heard any more lately on it though...

The other thing - don't these black boxes mentioned in the article only record the last 13 seconds before an impact and something like 30 seconds after?

Be a bl**** clever box then to predict an accident was due in 13s

Wish I had one fixed to a warning light  ;)

Black boxes in aircraft are actually bright orange so they can be found easier.

My 2pen'orth;

With almost all garages hooked up to the comped MOT system, the powers that be now have all the legal information a button press away. Within 2 years all hgv's will have the neccessary transponder fitted to enable excise licence collection to be based on usage. I'm sure it will follow for all vehicles within 5 years or so. Drive down the motorway, you can't go 1/2 mile without running over one of those inductor loops?. The detection system is in place. 1984?, OK, a few years late, but it's here now.

There's no way all those overhanging "warning" things, that must have cost 50K a chuck, are there to tell sleepy drivers to take a break

:arse:  :arse:  :arse:  :arse:

Only get out, drive an old/obscure/kit/Q car 'cos they think we will fade away,

Little do they know. ;)  ;)  ;)
