Differential

As some of you are aware I purchased a new differential that had been sitting in someones garage for a number of years. I have cleaned the input and output drives with some steel wool (surface rust only). I decided it would be a good idea to open the diff up to check that a) it was new and b) that the internals had not rusted (I knew had not seized as I could turn by hand).

1. It looks new but first problem, thinking ahead to registration, how do I prove it is new without an invoice from the manufacturer?

2. What type of gasket compound do I need in replacing the cover. I have been informed that the TORX T50 bolts should be torqued between 33-44 ft/lbs, yep I will torque bolts in an adjacent manor a little at a time. Other than this, anything else I need to know?

Is this photo good enough to prove unused?

clean both surfaces well and use clear silicon sealer there is no gasket, tighten diagonaly & go round again to confirm torque. Regards Gordon :blues:

Without wishing to alarm you, because I'm not sure 100% sure, but it doesn't look much like a slipper to me...

I can't see the photo from this PC, but I vaguely remember an earlier post where Adam had tested it with the old turn a drive shaft flange by hand trick. IIRC it behaved properly for an lsd. (Both outputs turning the same way).

As gadgetman says I tested it was an LSD before I parted with cash by turning one of the output drives and observing that the opposite output drive turned in the same direction, in an open diff the opposite output drive turns in the opposite direction. Now I have taken the back off you can see the friction plates on the left.

Hello gordon,

Happy new year. Silicon sealant! I presume not the bathroom variety with antifungal additives!

Adam

Use Silicone instant gasket from Halfords or a motor factors, one tube goes a long way and is not expensive.

Adam, you will need an invoice to back up your claim that the diff is new.

I'm sure you can hold of one ;)

Apologies... I thought you coudn't see the planet gears on slippers because of all the slippy stuff in the way. Maybe, that works for plate diffs only.

It isn't a plate diff. The "friction plates" referred to are where the viscous fluid sits. It's the viscoud fluid contained withing these plates that controls the LSD action.

I had the same thoughts about a diff I saw on E-bay a few weeks ago. I expected not to see the planet gears but there they were. Quite a discussion ensued on the se7ens list as to whether it was an LSD or not. Turns out the Ford LSDs have the viscous coupling bolted up against the crown wheel (you can see it sandwiched between the crown wheel and the diff carrier to the left of the crown gear itself above).

Other types of LSD (Quaiffe ATB, etc) Have a mechanism where the planet gears are and you just see a metal cylinder here.

The diff works by placing a viscous coupling between the crown wheel and the left hand driveshaft. This didn't sound like it would work when I first realised it, but when you think about it, either wheel losing traction results in a speed differential between the left hand driveshaft and the crown wheel, and this causes the transfer of torque to the other wheel.

Yes, I read on the howitworks website that there are various methods employed in which to facilitate an LSD but  one sure thing is that the output flanges turn in the same direction so I was quite happy it was an LSD before I even parted with my much earned cash. I opened up the diff to check the teeth on the cogs looked good and new. I was expecting to see two plates sandwiched on the left, not sure why I expected this, must have read somewhere that fords use a viscous lsd. Anyway I might tweak with the diff when I finally get the car built and ran for a while, you know what it is like, if I do I would probably go for quaife internals and make change the ratio numerically lower to improve first gear, that is if I go for an R380 gearbox for my V8. Who knows were it will end?

Looks like a visc diff to me. Very clever piece of engineering which if I remember correctly won Ford a design award.

They seem to work very well in a Westy.

Interesting, I did not know that. Maybe this is one item I will not be upgrading then!
