steppenwolf Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I need to make up some rubber strips to replace the 'grip strip' on the focus wheels of a telescope as the originals have perished. I need some rubber mat between 1.0mm and 1.5mm thick to cut into strips 12mm wide by about 120mm long, ideally with a smooth finish on one side and a 'patterned' finish on the other to assist with grip. Any thoughts on where I could get some? Come on you guys, you already know I'm weird .... Quote
Mark B Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I've got loads of fluted rubber if that's any use, no probs sending you some, otherwise have a look on rswww.com or farnell components? HTH Mark. Quote
KerryS Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 There's a sheet rubber supplier about 1/2 mile down the road from me. I could go in and ask if you like, but there must be somewhere nearer to you than Derby? You're really looking for off-cuts with those sizes. I had two sheets of rubber covering the garage floor during the build that I got from Machine Mart, but at 6mm thick and 1.2m x 6m, they're a bit excessive for your needs Kerry Quote
Blatman Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Or use the latex gloves you use in the workshop. You're wierd enough that no-one will bother to ask why you're out on moors with a telescope, wearing latex gloves... Quote
Boomy Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 What about something like the floor covering stuff like i have in my Westy? That is smooth one side and has ridges on the other. Not sure how thick it is though but car builder solutions do a similar looking thing. I'm not saying that is exactly what you need etc, just wondering if floor coverings are worth a look. http://www.nfauto.co.uk/index.html Also, things like rubber turntable covers may even help if you have ones laying around you no longer need. zvezdochka Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I think Woolies, suppliers of all sorts of trim, carpet and seal sections might be worth a shot. What about old bike inner tubes? Rick Quote
steppenwolf Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 Mark B, thanks, how thick is the fluted rubber? Kerry S, thanks but a little too thick for my purpose. Blatman, yummy, latex gloves but how could I possibly be expected to cut the little chums up into strips? Boomy, thanks, the turntable idea is a good'n Zvezdochka, are we talking about the dog in Sputnik 10 or shoes? I like the old inner tube idea - I could make hundreds out of one tube! Pistonbroke, Cheers, that is one I will follow up right now on the telephone. Thanks guys .... Quote
Kevin Wood Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 My cousin runs a rubber supplier in Norwich. If nothing comes of the above give me a shout and I'll see what he can do. Might be visiting him in February too. Kevin Edited to add: Or call him directly: http://www.walker-rubber.co.uk Quote
Westfieldman Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Have a look here at Arco under rubber sheeting Quote
Blatman Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Blatman, yummy, latex gloves but how could I possibly be expected to cut the little chums up into strips? Wear them Quote
steppenwolf Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 Blatters, I said Focus WHEEL and indeed, the wheel has a rim and without the rubber insert this rim is like a dual line pastry trimmer! Even with Marigolds on it would be too uncomfortable to grip .... Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I would probably use tennis or squash racket grip. Supplied in rolls. "Overgrip" is usually less than 1mm thick and non adhesive. "Grip" is usually 1 - 2 mm thick and self adhesive. Available in many colours from just about any sports shop. Quote
