JonnyBoy Posted December 17, 2005 Posted December 17, 2005 I have all my cd's ripped to mp3 on my computer which is great as i'm moving around all the time. I recently got an ipod nano for the 'choice' collection of tunes, but as my music is all ripped at at least 192kbs VBR or even 320kbs VBR i only get some 600 songs on ly 4gb nano as opposed to the 1000 I should at 128kbs. I'm hoping to get a laptop as well to throw my entire music collection onto, but would like to reduce my collection down to a more manageable file size set. So, in itunes (which i can't stand) if i 'consolidate my library' and have my mp3 import settings at 128kbs vbr, will it downsample my entire collection and create new versions? Failing that, what else can i use to truck through my music library to make em smaller? I'd try it.. but it may take some time and I dont want to fill a hdd if its not going to work. any suggestions appreciated J Quote
adhawkins Posted December 17, 2005 Posted December 17, 2005 Resampling of MP3s is generally not a good idea. You'll potentially end up with stuff that sounds horrible. A far better way to do it (if you can afford the disk space) is to rip to a lossless format (I use FLAC) and then you can transcode these to any format you like. Andy Quote
JonnyBoy Posted December 17, 2005 Author Posted December 17, 2005 true.. but that would mean getting all my cd's out again arrgg Quote
adhawkins Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 But once you've got them in a lossless format and correctly tagged, you'll never need to rip them again. You'll be able to support any future format you like. Currently about 90% of my collection is ripped as MP3s. However, all new stuff gets ripped to FLAC, and if I want a higher quality playback I'll sometimes re-rip a CD to FLAC. Andy Quote
steve_m Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 true.. but that would mean getting all my cd's out again arrgg I've done this recently, never got into the mp3 thing because of the lower sound quality so there are some CD's I've not heard for ages, some of them haven't been played for 4 or 5 years. Have to say it's been a great process, really enjoyed rediscovering some great music. Pink Floyd, John Martyn and another Tangerine Dream album this weekend. Quote
