Changing Wheel Colour

Recommended Posts

There's a long story behind this which I'll not bore you with, but.....

I have two 'silver' alloys wheels which I'd like to get stripped and changed to 'chrome'. Or perhaps get all 4 wheels changed to the same colour.

Does anyone know of a company who can do this sort of work, perferably in the Southampton / Portsmouth area.

Cheers  :D

Hi Pinto boy, Guess your best bet is Yellow pages or similar. Found one under " Wheel Refurbishment" Normally about £35.00 a corner. Ian

Hi,

Powder coaters will alwys do this sort of work...Try A1 powder coaters in Woolston, Also, South coast Wheels by the train staiion just quoted me 200 for 5 wheels (althought that was a change to black).....

If you want an actual chrome finish, then the obvious answer is a chromers....

Seconded. The local powdercoaters would be my first port of call...

Another thing....Unless the wheels are really wort saving, sometimes t can be cheaper to bag yourself another set of wheels....I just sold a set in perfect condition, with good tyres for £150....ebay, adtrader, pistonheads, all have wheel and tyre sections......

Cheers.

FYI, the price I was quoted included a full prep, and undercoat for a 'perfect finish....If you can get a good job done for 25 quid a wheel, then go for it, just make sure it's not a quick 'mask the tyre, and spray job....Sure it's not in this case but be aware....When I was looking, there were companies offering this.....

Agreed, I've heard horror stories from certain mobile wheel refurbishers.

I'm based at Farnborough Hants and am looking for a professional firm to refurb my TSW alloys and spray to matt black.

Near junction 11 M4.Theres a guy who vapour blasts them for around a tenner and at the back of my work at Green Park next to the Madjeski stadium a guy who powder coats. All a proper job.Did my wheels and does various other bits for my car and as I say, cash talks. If you want something done, mail me and I will help you out.He does a matt,semi-gloss or gloss black finish.I went for semi,or though it looks fab, maybe the gloss would look a bit more bling.

Did say he would powdercoat my mate Derns chassis he's building for £80( if it fits in the oven)

Just a point to note.

Most alloy wheel castings will be porous this has a good chance of effecting the quality of the powder coating if the wheels are sand blasted prior to coating.

The sandblasting removes the "skin" of the casting exposing the porous casting underneath.

When the casting is heated to about 200 degrees centrigrade needed to melt the plastic powder coating, gasses trapped in the casting expand and are forced to the surface.

As the gasses exit from the casting they "bubble" through the plastic coating giving it a "pin dangler" or pitted looking finish when it's cool.

There is less chance of this happening if the castings are not sandblasted but the finish is not guarentueed even then and removing the paint and laquer with Nirtomorse is very time consuming.

It seems that the older the castings the worse the issue is.

If the powder coaters pre-heat the castings before the powder is applied the issues can be lessened.

If the people who are doing the coating are giving you a guarentueed finish you really need to check the job has been done properly, powder coating is really difficult to get off once its been done.
