adamnreeves Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Can someone explain to me the parts of a differntial including LSD type and the various options one has to rebuild one. I am especially interested in which parts, say a Quaife aftermarket diff replace? Quote
Mike H Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 As I understand it - the quaiffe option will involve using only your diff case, crown wheel and pinion. You may be able to reuse the bearings and seals depending on their condition. You will need quaiffe stub shafts as the Ford ones won't stay in properly. In a Ford setup they are held in with circlips, the quaiffe ones use some other method and add about £200 on top of the cost of the diff unit itself. Mike Quote
adamnreeves Posted November 30, 2005 Author Posted November 30, 2005 This any use? Andy Yes, cheers, a very useful site also. Quote

Mike Not sure I know what a stub shaft is but isn;t the ford output drives on the diff 100mm with torx type bolts anyway? Quote
gordonandmaureen Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 i have fitted the quaif lsd in to many seirra diffs & depending on the age of the casing it is possible that you will have to grind out the sides of the casing to get it in this is no real problem except that you will have to remove all the bearings & steam clean it afterwards, so if you do not have the proper tools it will be very difficult. The ford multi plate is basically not reclaimable after it is worn F.F.developments will do it but it costs a bomb if you do decide to fit an L.S.D. contact me as i have the tools regards Gordon Quote

cast iron Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Ecellent site - added to my favourites Hard boiled egg Quote
Toby Mack Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 in case it helps, here are a couple of pics of the inside of a diff. 1st shows the ATB with crownwheel fitted (housing is on the bench behind). Second shows it assembled in the housing. This is for a live axle rather than the independant I think you have but the principle is the same. atb and crownwheel assembled. Quote
adamnreeves Posted December 3, 2005 Author Posted December 3, 2005 And then there's this one too... interesting site. Thanks. Quote
nikpro Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 wouldn't bother trying to recon/build your own diff; leave to the experts with specialist tools etc. Quote
