George Best

Whatever you're doing overnight...Wish a bit of hope that George Bests last hours are as comfortable and dignified as they can be...

Whatever you think of the morals of his behaviour/transplant/lifestyle etc..... give him some credit and maybe a little respect for having been someone who was a football genius; a man who knew how to have a party; a great entertainer...but most of all as someone who took a little risk and lived life to the full.

Well said Scott.

I'll never forget seeing him play at windsor park when I was a nipper.  In my eyes he messed his life up... but I respect the fact that he never had any regrets.

<< tips hat to George.

To some he may of messed his life up, but who knows, we may of done the exact same thing if we were in his position.

Others will say what a hell of a good way to mess it up.

A great character regardless and another gentle reminder none of us are here for long.

Yeah what a guy, he kept going missing  ;)

Miss World (3 of em)

Miss United Kingdom

Miss Canada

Miss Wales

And he spent all his money wisely, wine, women, and fast cars

Like I said what a guy  :t-up:

And he's still hangin in there

I disagree

He had a chance, one many people can only wish for, he blew it, so he should not have sympathy just because he's a footballer.

We have all seen people who have needed transplants and the effect it has on their life is truly amazing.

You disagree with what exactly? Surely not that a dying man deserves a little dignity and respect?

I take it you've assumed he's dying just because he's continued drinking after having a new liver?

You've not considered then that his anti rejection therapy will have rendered his immune system very ineffective, leading to him developing a pneumonia. This pneumonia then started the SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome.....I can explain if you wish)which then developed into Severe Sepsis.

Severe sepsis has (as it does) caused MOF(multi organ failure....I can explain this too if you wish) to include his respiratory/renal/hepatic system and we arrive at the almost always irreversible situation that we see George at now.

Internal bleeding reported on various news shots will be due to Hepatic system failure and the resultant inability of the body to maintain the normal system of blood clotting/clotting factor production.

So would it be more palletable if the donor receipient in question had led a sober/less colourful life?  George just got lucky in that a liver became available that was suitable for him at the time. A transplanted organ can give you the chance to live your life again; but once it's given you can only hope that it lasts (a large number of organs reject anyway) and that the receipient appreciates that they've been lucky enough to get  an organ replacement. You cannot however tell them what they have to do with their lives after the transplant.

Oh; and I never said that he should get our respect/thoughts/wishes just because he was a football player.

Just as a man who's enjoyed his life in the way he saw fit, worn his heart on his sleeve; and along the way provided for a family, played some excellent football and been brave enough to go through the transplant ordeal

I do understand what happens.

People need to look after their bodies even more after such an experience.  His continuing problems will not have helped his cause.  My thought is the press glorify the fact he carries on as before, making him feel all is okay.

Rejection could occur anyway, but his lifestyle will not help his cause.

We were just talking about him at tea break and both views outlined above by my fellow members above were aired. One of the lads in the hut said we should have a sweepstake to see how long he lasts, and cold hearted as it may sound, I think he'd have probably had a laugh at this and maybe joined in :D

I have mixed feelings, I can see both points of view.  I don't like this half hour running commentary of his dying hours throughout the media though, it's hardly dignified.  But I seem to recall (and I may be wrong) sometime last year Scott when you were having a rant on here about having been involved in giving someone a transplant who had tried to commit suicide, and that this had denied someone who would have really really wanted it and made better use of it.  Having said that, I think that alcoholism is an addiction like any other and it's all very easy for us to criticise someones lifestyle when it probably runs much deeper than that

Seems that George is still a top entertainer   :t-up:

whatever your views he was a lot of peoples hero and led a life style to be enveyed .

I always wonder if the drink side of things was an escape from media attention , from what I knew of the man he was basically a very shy person inside who was forced into the limelight because of his extrordinary talent .
