slippy Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I would not touch it with a Barge Pole personally Quote
Phil. S Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I would treat all such e-mails with a great deal of caution, but if they know the last four digits, it is probably genuine. (I think Paypal say that they will identify themselves in e-mails in this way.) For this reason you should not make public the last 4 digits of your card, eg, by putting them on this post! If you use a link in the e-mail, make sure it takes you where it says it will takes you, ie really to paypal, and not somewhere else that looks like paypal. Alternatively, just go to paypal in the usual way and update your card. Quote
steppenwolf Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 I too have received this information. Being the suspicious type, I logged onto my account without using any hyperlinks in the email I had received. On my personal page, there was the same notification and indeed my card does expire as stated so they were right to bring this to my attention! The card ending is not exactly unique as there are only 4 digits after all but it is not the same last 4 digits for everyone. If you log onto your account independently of the email and you get the same notification from Ebay/Paypal then it is fair to assume that the email is genuine - however, if your log-on does not confirm this then I would be with Slippy and assume it is a scam! adhawkins Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 A sure-fire way to tell if a PayPal e-mail is genuine is if it starts with (something like) 'Dear Fred Bloggs'. If they know your name, it's almost certainly from PayPal. The scams usually don't have the greeting like that. As the others have said though, if you're at all unsure, type the PayPal URL into the browser address bar rather than trusting the links in the e-mail. Andy Quote
pistonbroke Posted November 21, 2005 Author Posted November 21, 2005 Thanks Chaps They did use my full name There are no links to paypal in the email the 4 numbers I posted are bogus (mine , I aint so dumb as to tell you lot me cred details ) It pays sometimes to get e.m. nuerosis Just thought id check , it did same strange but I suppose they have to contact us somehow . gee_fin Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Quite simply, never follow a link from any email to log into any type account, be they PayPal/eBay/hotmail/yahoo/etc. If you are wondering if it's genuine, simply type in the url yourself and log in normally. There are some very authentic scam emails doing the rounds (especially the ones around eBay and PayPal), a view-source will show you the scam link, but for those non-techie people, always type in the url (www.paypal.com / etc) manually. tankerman24 Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 If you get any E Mails claiming to be from Paypal or E Bay forward them to either, spoof@ebay.com or spoof @paypal.com and they will E Mail you to let you know if its genuine, all genuine E Mails should be in your E Bay messages box.
