Court ruling threatens Monza race

Monza's future as host of the Italian Grand Prix could be in peril after a court ruled cars racing there must have silencers to reduce noise pollution.

Judge Marco Manunta upheld complaints from residents of the town of Biassono.

The Gazzetta dello Sport said he called motor racing a "superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the environment".

"At this moment in time we would not be able to host F1," said circuit director Enrico Ferrari, who vowed to appeal.

The circuit is co-owned by the municipalities of Monza and the city of Milan, and city officials said they were confident their appeal would be successful.

"It is right to protect the environment but it is also right that we should avoid excesses that might wipe out important traditions," said Milan deputy major, Riccardo De Corato.

All true petrol heads like it loud, an example of the stupidity is Donington, they have a 98db limit when the track is right on the flight path for East Midlands airport ? there are 747 at about 100ft for fooks sake

Surely such a charge could be levelled at many sporting, and even non sporting events. The Olympics is going to have a detrimental effect on east London right up until the closing ceremony.

Pop concerts cause local havoc and are noisy, extreme skiing can cause avalanches...

The Italian magistate is clearly either chief curmudgeon, or he's trying to raise his name in a bid to become Italy's next President.

And when all's said and done, I'll bet the GP goes ahead as usual...

I hate people like this, how long has Monza been there?  Probably longer than most have lived there, why live somewhere there's going to be noise and then complain.  Move house goodness me.

IMO People that buy a house with in range, so to speak, of something that causes a disturbance such as a racetrack should be made to sign a document when they buy the property that says they understand what they are buying and the disturbances they might encounter and as they are aware of this, no sueing will be allowed...

That depends on how well Ferrari are doing next year, if they're in with a shout, It'll go ahead for certain
