Metalastic bushes

Reading ahead in my build manual it talks of installing these bushes in the upper and lower wishbones. The manual says that they are 2 per wishbone but I think the lower one needs 3? Anyway was a little curious as to how these are inserted, have I read somewhere that 10tonne of pressure is required! I also note that the inner collar is higher than the outer one, does this mean who installed them needs to exert pressure on outer collar only. I have also heard of nylon bushes, are these better, are they relevant or am I confused!

Hi Adam,

Don't bother with the metalastic bushes.

They're a pain in the rear to fit and move alot, far better to fit poly or nylon bushes.

They're the same price and will give far less suspension movement which helps keep the goemetry correct when cornering, braking etc, plus makes the car "feel" tighter.

HTH,

Mark.

use poly ones, just dont forget to grease them before you fit them

I thought that might be the case, reason for checking before I install. I have been ringing round engineering companies to install and so far drew a blank, thankfully!

So where can I get these bushes from and what do I ask for! Sorry but I am so niave regarding suspension!

CAT Motorsport sell the poly bushes, and Westfield do the nylon version.

Cat - clicky

Silly Q - have you checked they're not already pressed into the wishbones?

Nope! All 18 of them are in a poly bag. I see although that WF have installed the ones in the chassis for the diff, nice of them.

So what is better, poly or nylon. Pros and cons? I suspect nylon is more hardwearing and poly better handling?

Nylon are the best for handling as they move less, however they are more awkward to install & the handling difference between them and poly would not really be that noticeable tbh.

Westfield sell the poly ones aswell, personally I'd buy them from them.

Oh but don't forget to fit a metalastic bush on the outboard side of the lower rear wishbones so they can move as the rosejoint is adjusted for rear toe.

so 16 poly bushes and 4 metalastic bushes for a complete car?

So I still need to find an eningeering company to install the metalastcs.

Thank-you for the feedback.

Ah OK!

Mine were already installed even though it said to press them in.

Although I have no experience, wouldn't a vice drive them in, remembering to press on the outer of course not the inner. Sockets make useful press tools.

If you get really stuck with the 2 metalastics Adam, let me know as we have two presses at work (done a few sets on them), I know it'd mean posting them etc but the offer's there if you need it.

Cheers,

Mark.

You'd think, wouldn't you.

Instead it's welcome to the "oops I've broken another vice" club.

I sheared the casting on my first vice, I've only burred some of the teeth away and bent the handle U shaped on the second.

A press would have been so much easier.  <!--emo&

I stand corrected :p
