Hi I'm new!!!!

Hi, I've been watching the forum for a while, and now plucked up courage to post. My kit arrives on friday - a SDV in Post office Red (though Westfield are keeping the body for me). I've already decided to ditch the Sierra engine for a Zetec, and fancy a 2.0 l (target approx 150-160 Bhp). Two questions - how best to acquire a Zetec (ebay, recon unit or where). What's the minimum I should expect to do to it before fitment?

Finally, what' the pro's and cons of the type 9 vs MT75. Instructions say you must use MT75 with Zetec, but Mark Walker says you can use type 9 - there must be pro's and cons??? Help I'm confused!!!!!

Welcome to the club, Getting a Zetec is easy you could buy a whole car for £250-£300 and get to hear it running selling off other bits will lessen the cost. As for the gear box the MT75 is fine for genral road use and the odd track day, however there are not that many different gear ratios available for the MT75. On the other hand the type 9 is available with loads of ratios with straight cut gears and all the bits for speed and track use. So if you have an MT75 box and are looking at a road car it is okay, if you intend to do track work go for the type 9

Hi Nick, welcome aboard!

We got our Zetec from a salvagers about 6 years ago, Haven't done anything with it apart from clean it up and bolt it on.  This may not be the best way to go about it though!  Can't say if it's caused any problems as we haven't quite got the car registered yet!

We got the MT75 as there were loads about and they were cheap.  150 squid got us a one from a granada that had done less than 40k.  Again this was a long time ago....

The downside of the MT75, as far as I hear, are the gear ratios, which aren't particularly suited...  You can't really upgrade them either.

The Type 9 has the benifit of being far more upgradable...

Hope this helps, i'm sure someone will be along to give a bit more help!

Hi Nick, welcome to the club :D

I have a spare 2.0 zetec engine that i may part with, its one of the correct vintage for emmisions too, if your interested let me know!

If you do use MT75 box try and get a 3.62 (LSD if poss), i find this a great setup for the road and a good compromise for the track!

I also started with SDV starter kit and fitted 2.0 zetec, MT75, LSD, Megasquirt etc, etc, if you need any advice drop me a PM

Good luck with the build, and the main thing is to enjoy!

Hi Nick,

I got my 2ltr zetec from Parts Gateway and they were pretty good. Got to see the engine running in the car.

Make sure if you go through a breaker that you ask them for everything you need (coil pack, alternator, clutch, etc..) otherwise as i learnt, they will remove them by default!

Also be aware that the 98 onwards engines require more mods then the pre 98 engines.

Either way 160 BHP could be reached easily.

Good luck.

Thanks all. Are there any issues with gearlever position in the car, or does both the type 9 and the MT75 position end up the same?

Go for a Type 9,

have Mt75 in my 2 litre zetec and First gear is very short  :(

Also when it comes to removing the Prop/Gearbox the type 9 is alot easier (prop just 'pops' out)

with Mt75 you have to undo the prop from the 'Cush' drive.

Still have the scars from last time i removed it    :arse:

If you want to get the Zetec engine tweaked, give Scholar Engines a call (01449 767711), they have good deals on Jenvey throttle body conversion, MBE ECU etc.

Hi Nick,

I am building exactly the same spec as you and picked up my type 9 for around £35 from ebay. Engine Gearbox and diff all clean up very well with a drill, wire brush attachment. A spray of Hammerite (also works for brake calipers so do not worry about the heat) then makes them look as good as new. With regard to the gear shift I am using a water rail from Raceline which will enable me to fit the engine further back in the engine bay. There is a small mod required to the bell housing (remobe te protruding starter housing and I can let you have the pattern if you need it. There are plenty of people with lodas more experience than me but feel free to PM me and I can talk you through the ins and outs of my choices. Are you fitting carbs or Throttle Bodies?

Mitch.
