I was "done" a couple of years ago, I had a fair bit of bruising that lasted a couple of weeks and a fair bit of discomfort for the first couble of days, all fine within a week.

The worst thing was the smell of burning flesh as the surgon used a lazer quateriser.

You need to make sure that the anethatist does a really good job, I needed a "top up" half way through  

I chose to have it done as I thought it was unfair to let Mrs Slide take care of the contraception after we had our second child and agreed we did'nt want any more kids.

I felt the the "risk" to me was minimal compared to the inherant risk to Mrs Slide if she kept on taking the pill for the next 25 or so years.

Do NOT believe the Doc when he suggests a local anaesthetic is fine.  Laying in a ward with 5 other freshly shaven chaps  and the nurse asks who's your aneathetist and then she says, "oh, you are the only one having a local" is not a nice way to start any day.

As pointed out by several the jab is not always effective....  Said nurse ran out of soothing things to say between the first snip and the time I felt ready to carry on for the second one and it is not very dignified laying there with the flap on the theatre gown lifted.  "Please keep your thighs together" was a regular call from Mr Scalpelman.  Would have been far preferable to snooze through it.

That said, half an hour after the op I drove myself home and normal operation was resumed shortly thereafter.
