RS WST Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 As title suggests a friend of mine is looking to put a Rover tomcat turbo engine out the 220 turbo in a mid engined kit car using a Renault 21 turbo gearbox. Probably the MK GT1 which is now run by: www.spiresportscars.co.uk Does anyone make a bellhousing to suit this configuration. Any other other alternatives for a gearbox would be grately recieved as he wants to keep the engine in line. He will be putting some serious power through it as the car will be used for sprinting. Martin Keene Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I thought the Renault Transaxle had a built in bell housing... Quote
Eccentric_Rich Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 The Banks Europa boys might be able to help - Europa Richard. Quote
zoso Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Not sure but I thought the Rover turbo engine wasn't a K series... O series rings a bell...? Quote
Thrustyjust Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I thought it was the 'T' series although the engine block was originally from the 'O' Quote
RS WST Posted October 24, 2005 Author Posted October 24, 2005 I'm asuming most of the Rover range use the same style bell housing, like the Fords do. Anyway don't want to go off on a tangent, just want to know what the options are? Anyone know of a bellhousing that may work? or perhaps a different gearbox? Quote

Wasn't trying to de-rail your thread, but it's quite a big assumption your making there.... That Renault box turns up in GT40 replicas as far as I can remember, mabey giving the guys who make them a shout could yield some results... Quote
Thrustyjust Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I believe that to fit a renault gearbox to the V8's in a GT40 requires an adaptor plate made up between them,so I guess that will be youre answer and will probably be a one off. I know that the renault gearbox is a)getting rare b) not that goo c) cost a lot to rebuild as they were fitted to Lotus's in the espirit and my neighbour had one.Concensus is that people are putting the Audi 6 speed box's in these kind of cars now Quote

RS WST Posted October 25, 2005 Author Posted October 25, 2005 The other option is the VAG box but does anyone know how much power it can handle? Quote
S8ight Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 The other option is the VAG box but does anyone know how much power it can handle? the early quattro 5 speed box will take at least 500ft/lbs of torque. have heard the 6 speed box isnt as strong mate of mine has got a few brand new 6 speed boxes knocking around but they are 4wd ones. or if you are stuck for a reno box mate of mine has been doing lotus boxes for years, he might have a few reno boxes also. (same box with the diff in the other way round) the bell housing is part of the box so you will need to make an adaptor plate, you might then have problems with input shaft lentgh. Quote
