studbuckle Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 According to the press: Standard-Times photo by Angela Ramos Steve Rose and Buzz Billsberry from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, arrived at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday in their Lotus, a European racing car. They are traveling with the "How the West was Driven" 2005 tour, which started in Houston and ends in San Francisco. Sure to allure By JOE MANUEL RODRIGUEZ, jrodriguez@sastandardtimes.com or 659-8263 September 19, 2005 San Angelo pit stop by more than 60 Lotus sports cars Sunday caused a few double-takes at stoplights. The caravan of European racing cars is trekking across the country during a three-week trip, dubbed the ''How the West was Driven'' 2005 tour, that began in Houston on Thursday and will end in San Francisco. Lotuses are constructed from kits, costing $15,000 to $50,000, depending upon the options, and built for speed. The cars, about 4 feet wide and 7 feet long, were originally designed for racing and still sport a souped-up look that's sure to elicit stares when they hit the streets. ''People ask us questions when we stop at the lights,'' Vivien Harris said. Harris was the passenger in her fiance's car, a Series 5 Lotus. She and her husband-to-be picked up their car in Houston after it had been shipped from overseas. Once they reach San Francisco, the car will be shipped back to Europe. Loren Edwards, a friend of two of the drivers, organized the San Angelo stop at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. The drivers began arriving about 11 a.m. and were in and out of the parking lot for several hours. Edwards said he wanted the drivers to have a place to stop and rest. The San Angelo Convention & Visitors Bureau offered the drivers discounts to the museum and to the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark before the caravan continued west to Midland, where the drivers spent the night. For Harris and her fiance, Martin Richards, both from Chester, England, the stop in Las Vegas will be a special one - they'll be married there. ''We wanted to do something different,'' Richards said of the road trip and Vegas nuptials. The trip proved to be a hot one for the drivers. Lotuses do not have air-conditioning, a move to reduce their weight and increase their speed. ''The heat gets to you,'' Matt Thonger said. Thonger, 25, of Nutley, England, was driving a 1968 original Lotus with his father on the trip. Thonger said he had been planning the father-son bonding trip with his dad for three years. Lucie Adams of San Angelo said she came to see the cars because a friend of hers from Dallas was in the trip. ''They're pretty cool,'' she said of the small cars. Quote
