KerryS Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 As well as having any AV protection, surely one of the best protections is to be sensible about opening e-mails? I turn off preview in Outlook and do not open mails from unknown senders. OK might miss a few genuine ones but if the sender really wanted me they'd phone. My daughter's approach is to use an Apple Mac where a lot of these issues don't seem to pervade the Apple world. Kerry S Quote
Martin Keene Posted October 6, 2005 Author Posted October 6, 2005 Ditto... The preview pane in Outlook Express and the reading pane in Outlook have to be 2 of the most dumb ass inventions ever! Quote
pistonbroke Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Never used virus protection for 10 yrs or so and never had a problem Perhaps because I never opened any unsolicited mail I dont think it was an issue with win98 but now with a new pc running win xp c\w norton the thing is full of warnings of doom and all that AV stuff aparantly the new ms windows os are very vulnerable to attack that's progress I suppose Quote
Martin Keene Posted October 6, 2005 Author Posted October 6, 2005 As already stated downloaded Zone Alarm will stop most things. I've got it and I really wouldn't be without it. Quote
GuyH Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Outlook suffers from the fact that it offers so much functionality. IE is also widely targetted. Combined with the Windows Scripting Host these two are asking for trouble, and unfortunately Microsoft are seen as fair game for trouble makers. As well as keeping your virus checker + spyware checker up to date, one simple way to make your life easier on Windows machine is to use a different browser and mail client. Firefox and Thunderbird are excellent of course. Quote
peterg Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 aparantly the new ms windows os are very vulnerable to attack er not quite true, many years ago as MS Windows became the operating system of choice (Bill Gates' choice that is ) the hackers targetted that more than any other and as they block one route vulnerable to attack it invariably opens up another somewhere else t'internet has made it far easier as it has enabled like minded tw*ts to share information about vulnerabilities more quickly plus of course there are inevitably more ways to get into someones PC as they have network cards/modems/wi-fi etc just make sure you have Service Pack 2 loaded on top of XP, use McAfee and keep it updated frequently, ZoneAlarm and Spybot and treat any unsolicited email with suspicion PS: if you want to see a truly secure operating system then try to break into IBM's OS400 sometimes I had trouble getting into it and I was the security officer for the systems! GuyH Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Oh, and one more obvious point that many of us overlook when using Win2k/xp etc. Don't spend all your computer time logged in as a local administrator! Create an account that does not have local admin rights, and browse the web and do every day tasks when logged in as this restricted user. Quote
