scott beeland Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 My Westbury house is 3 yrs old now and therefore out of warranty......So big lumps of mortar start falling off and we now have a hole into roof space by a ridge tile and one on the front eaves of the house Westbury wont do anything about it and NHBC haven't replied to my letter......so Any roofers on here that can do me a discount job? Or any ideas how I can go about getting IMO shoddy mortaring sorted(Westbury have admitted in the past....only verbally though ) that the Mortaring was done in frosty/icy weather so could be prone to falling off Quote
pistonbroke Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Have you tried your insurer ? Not an xpert but sure this type of thing should be covered (bricks and mortar etc.) might be worth a phone call Quote
adhawkins Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 I thought new houses had some sort of 10 year warranty thingy? Andy Quote
scott beeland Posted September 27, 2005 Author Posted September 27, 2005 They do but only seems to cover "major" structural failings Quote
adhawkins Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 And the roof falling to bits isn't 'major'? Andy Quote

Martin Keene Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 And it's not a surprise they don't stand by anything when you see how long they are on a site for... They inspected the roof on the 2nd phase of the flats we're building. The inspector was about 12 and he was there for all of 20mins... Not bad for a roof twice the size of your average house! Quote
Boxerman33 Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 You have rights, your roof has to be fit for purpose, which includes lasting a reasonable length of time. Tell the builders you want it sorting quickly and if they don't, take them to the small claims court!!! In my experience the small claims court is slightly biased in favour of the consumer Quote
pistonbroke Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Is it just me thought scott got a dog with a speech impediment Quote
higgsti Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 check the houses roundabout if they have similiar problems petition .i had similiar problems at christmas after coming home from hols i found 3 ridge tiles missing phoned a roofer who i recommend through work who told me a shoddy job was done .neighbour had same problem we wrote a letter to bellway customer services who came out and agreed the job was then redone ,rebed all ridges and repoint.solicitors letter helps .but if theres more problems on other houses bad publicty doesnt help theres always office of fair trading .mortar or sand and cement can still be laid in cold conditions as long as its not below freezing .sounds like you have same problem i did .is your house made from the same mortar oh f--k Quote
Mark Stanton Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Yep, NHBC. But unless it is structurally unsound it basically don't mean ****e... and even then, they're worthless. Boxermans sentiments are right but sorry Scott you don't stand much chance. Check house insurance route and try that way first or try the petition of fellow owners and play hell with Westbury Might be cheaper and far less hassle to pay a roofer/builder for a cash weekend job Quote
Rusty Nuts Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 try contacting your local trading standards office because goods being fit for the purpose of use is not just limited to warranty period something to do with the amount you have spent and a reasonable usefull life of the goods etc. you might be looking at small claims court cause getting good customer service or standard of goods is impossible nowadays.......... mark.anson Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 I am sure your local friendly ittinerant will be around soon to tarmac your roof sir!!! Quote
