Blatman Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I agree with everything Bazzer has said. Get the biggest silencer you can, and be prepared to repack it every so often. Quote
Molydood Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 that's excellent advice Bazzer, I will definitely go for the largest possible now, and thanks for the extra comments Blatman. Quote
Toby Mack Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 one comment on size. If you have swept wings then there might not be as much space as for cars with cycle wings. A friend has just fitted a westfield repackable (which is 6" I think??) and it comes fairly close to the bottom of the swept wing. Quote
custardtart Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Merlin Motorsport sell add ons to your silencer to get it through the strict noise regs at castle coombe, not cheap for what they are (they tend to have a captive market) but may be cheaper than a full exhaust! From experience I now have one for an x-flow and one for a zetec which take both below 100db Quote
Molydood Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 TM, cheers but I don't have wings custard, will check it cheers. also, is that quote on your signature from 'planes, trains...'? Quote
Liam Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 He has developed a track day silencer for this very reason and its very lightweight to add to the bargain. Is it done and sorted yet I spoke to him about a month ago and they were trying to source a suitable quality packing that would last a reasonable time but at reasonable cost. Quote
felters Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 parallel thread here... http://boardroom.wscc.co.uk/cgi-bin....t=32651 Some circuits are also big on drive by as well. The problem there is induction roar Quote
Molydood Posted September 30, 2005 Author Posted September 30, 2005 hmm, how do you get around induction roar then? fit an airbox? I planned on buying a wunoff 24inch by 6 inch can, but just found out the one on the car is 26 by 6 anyway, so I guess there is no point. Unless the Wunoff ones are quieter? Maybe I just need to pack it up with that cloth stuff, as opposed to the cotton wool type stuff. stop me if I get too technical here is there a way to measure the noise level before getting to the circuit? sorry for all the questions... Paul Ash Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 My Exhaust system for the VX came in at 105db with a 6" can. The new silencer 26" x 7" (the biggest they could fit in the gap) brings it in at 99db. Its a nice piece of work. highly recommended. Price tag £250 They'll make it to suit your car. felters Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 hmm, how do you get around induction roar then? fit an airbox? Yep. Try repacking your unit first - assuming it's repackable. If whatever is inside comes out as blackened confetti then that is your start point - and the cheapest thing - you can do. By the way - try to do it outside as it's 'kin messy and I shudder to think what would happen to your lungs if you were to inhale the dust. But ultimately it's all about the volume of the can... Btw... there was a posting a while ago about using Samco silicon hose on the end of your exhaust to reduce noise? I know that their hoses are good to 180C. Anyone know what the temperatures are of exhaust gas when it exits the silencer? Quote

Paul Ash Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 Yes Simpsons made the manifold. I supplied the spec courtesy of SBD, There was a small misunderstanding over the silencer can (too short), Which they corrected following a noise test, hence now a 7" can. Quote
