S8ight Posted September 24, 2005 Posted September 24, 2005 any reccomendations for decent carriers to the states ?? only small packages 2-3kgs but its glass and worth about $400-500 worth so bit paranoid about stuff getting broken. Quote
Diamond Posted September 24, 2005 Posted September 24, 2005 We always use TARGET for all of our deliverys, I am not saying that they are better than any of the others, but they do seem to deliver parcels intact to America Quote
JonnyBoy Posted September 25, 2005 Posted September 25, 2005 blatman knows all about shipping well.. he knows all about everything else seriously though, he was very helpful when I wanted to ship stuff to Vancouver. Quote
Blatman Posted September 25, 2005 Posted September 25, 2005 I do. Sadly, I have a strict policy on shipping glass. I don't... Basically, it is all but uninsurable. Sure, DHL/FedEx etc etc will say yes they can insure it, but when it arrives in bits, there will be a convenient get out. If you send it (and I am happy to help with arrangements) you send it at your own risk. Sorry... Quote
S8ight Posted September 26, 2005 Author Posted September 26, 2005 dont fancy sending it so far but the profit is to high to not sell stuff in the states only looking into it at the moment but will give you a shout again when im ready to start sending stuff over. Quote
markcoopers Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 Use FedEx here for our "edible samples", FedEx delivered in the USA in about 2 days, so really helpfull. Not sure about glass, but in food, shipments to USA need FDA prior notic clearence if you want them to go quick, or else they run the risk of being stopped and opend and inspected by customs. Withiout this, and even using TNT with, we were looking at upto 2 week delays. My experience suggest it pays to use a USA shipping company when going into the USA. Quote
Blatman Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Back from the weekend away... If you need to ship glass, then the *only* way to do it is in a flight case. Ignore couriers like FedEx/DHL etc unless they have flight cases for hire, and then obviously you need to factor that in to the costs. Have a ring round a few shipping companies as opposed to courier services, who may be more helpful with regards to proper packaging for fragile items. FWIW, FedEx and UPS have a 100% record for breaking glass that I have shipped for customers, despite it being *well* packed. Some of the glass stuff I ship is valued in excess of 10 grand, and we now insist that rather than ship it, it goes as hand luggage with whoever is going to the destination, and that they pay any excess baggage fee which they claim back later. No breakages since... Mark is spot on with food and over the counter medicines for the US. Clothing items require in depth customs declarations, and any organic material (Leather,Cotton etc) are now impounded and quarantined while they check for weevils/bugs/insects that may have eggs/larvae in the garments. Delays of up to 6 weeks to two months are common... Glass requires no pre-notification, or any special licences. Quote
S8ight Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 the bits are going to be well wrapped in bubble wrap and in a hard box so should be quite hard to break. even if it breaks its not the end of the world, the stuff im sending costs me under £10. will just keep my fingers crossed Quote
Blatman Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Can it withstand the impact of a 50 kilo case dropping on it from 5 feet up? If not, it ain't packed properly. Remeber, your luggage can shift during take off and landing... As I've said though, either talk to a shipping company rather than a courier company, or take out the insurance. The only gotcha with insurance is that if you declare the value paid by the punter, it *will* incur import duty. If you declare the replacement value, the punter wil know the real cost of the item 'cos it'll be on the airway bill. If you declare the value for customs as the replacement value, but insure it for the full value, that'll be 7 years for customs fraud if they set aside the offence of conspiring to commit insurance fraud, so watch out...
