Personal number plates...

I've got a personal number plate on my Discovery and as I'm about to sell it, I want to take the number plate off and (so I'm told) put it on retention. I don't quite know what I'll replace the Disco with, so I don't have a car to transfer it to immediately.

Does anyone know how I do this and put an age related plate back on the Disco?

Many thanks

Not long since been through this process. If you go to the DVLA site there are some forms that you can download and some that you need to send for. Can't remember now just which ones you need, but suggest download INF46 to start with.

I think, but not sure, that you send the completed docs to nearest DVLA office, not Swansea. After a little while, not too long IIRC, you will get a form that states your right to retain the cherished number and the replacement number for the Disco - in all probability, the one it gave up when you put the cherished plate on. I think you also get a new tax disc for the Disco with a request to return the old one. You will get a regestration entitlement form that you can use to get the replacement plates for the Disco.

If you are trading in, you can probably get the dealer to do some of the leg work, but if you are selling privately you'll have to do it all and put the new replacement plates on.

I took my reg. off the Volvo before it was traded in against it's replacement, and nearly six months later, I still have not got the V5 from Swansea. Until I have that, I can't transfer my retained number. Mind you it'd probably been complicated by the dealer regestering it on one day and me buying it the next day - still it saved me £4k so I can put up with it :)

Felters - You need to go into your local DVLA office with £105

(£80 transfer fee & £25 retention fee)

They give you the form, fill it out.

Hand over the tax disc, mot, filled out form & the log book.

Depending on how busy they are - it could take up to 7 days.

You will get the old original number plate back...

(About 12 years ago i got a different reg number back & i have ettched windows! - It looked like a ringer!;)

Once you get the new tax disc in the post, it's time to swap the plates on the car..

After 11 months, (if it's still on retention)

you will get a reminder thro the post & you need to pay another £25.

If you don't pay the £25 you will loose the cherished number....

When you go to put his onto a car, the fee is already paid when you took it off.

Hope this info is of use to you

Cheers

David
