langy Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Apologies for being a bit slow off the mark but is this the case with Westy's and othe 7 type cars GRP/GRE is a versatile material with many uses. Although GRP was originally developed in the UK during the Second World War as a replacement for the molded plywood used in aircraft radomes (GRP being transparent to microwaves) its first main civilian application was for building of boats, where it gained acceptance in the 1950s, and now plays a dominant role. taken from here Does this mean that PC Plod can only detect a GRP bodied car by pointing his radar gun at your engine block. Worth noting if this is the case ? Sean Quote
Blatman Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 We've mentioned this before, 'cos it's actually been tested... sort of. I'll be back... Quote
blankczechbook Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 probably due to the internal reflections dispersing the radar within the glass fibre matting used in the layup of the mould, however highly polished aluminium is highly reflective and as such a magnet for radar.... another reason for not getting a c******van Quote
Blatman Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 Can't find the right thread The gist of it is, we had access to a proper hand held radar speed gun. When pointed at an approaching Westfield, it was very dififcult for the gun to see the car. It was way too close to the operator when he finally got a reading, such that by the time you'd raised a hand to stop the car, it had already gone by. This was an aeroscreened car travelling at around 30mph, IIRC, maybe less. It certainly wasn't going quickly by any stretch of the imagination. I don't recall if we tested a car with a screen. With the car going away from the detector, the back panel was a large and easy flat target and getting a good, consistent, repeatable reading was so easy, Stevie Wonder could do it... Quote
Martin Keene Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 I can see this one being milked for a while yet... Quote
langy Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 Thanks for the replies. I guess it does prove something Blatman is not only Searchmeister and that GRP bodied cars have a lesser chance of getting caught by a radar Sean Quote
