SparkyB Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 I bid on an engine a week or so back and lost. It was my first ever use of E-bay so didn't give it a second thought. However, today I got 2 E-mails from E-bay which appear to be from other users (not the seller) offering the item to me from the original sale... however according to the feedback the sale did go through. Pretty sure it's all just a con, but can someone just confirm it for me. Cheers, Mark B Below is a copy of what i got (with details removed): *** Do not reply to this email. Contact the seller at this e-mail address:xxx@aol.com *** You expressed interest in an Ford 2.5 litre Duratec 24v V6 Mondeo/Cougar Item number: 4571552893 " by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, the seller of that item is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price of £xxx.00.The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction .If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection. Thank you, eBay, Inc ***Do not reply to this email as you will not receive an answer.Contact the seller at this e-mail address : xxx@aol.com *** Quote
scott beeland Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Sounds like a scam to me. If it's an email from ebay they ALWAYS address you by name in their posts. My advice would be report this to ebay sending them a copy of the emails you have received (you can report to ebay via the home page) and asking them to verify its authenticity. Ebay can; and do; contact sellers/buyers to sort out issues/problems etc Quote
Blatman Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Yup. Looks like a scam preying on folk who may be unfamiliar with the Second Chance Offer system. Easy way to tell though. Ask the seller via Ebay... Quote
Boomy Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Totaly normal that IF you get a mail from ebay and it is related to the seller of the item.It simply means the winning buyer has pulled out and you were the next highest bidder so rather than relist the item, the seller is happy enough to sell to you at your higest bid. Had a few second chance offers in my time, it should appear in your ebay messages etc. I can't comment on your specific case of course as if as you suggest you got that mail from someone else and not the seller then something is not right at all.Best bet is to use the 'ask the seller a question' option if you can and wait for a reply if you are unsure. Blatman Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 The killer for me is ***Do not reply to this email as you will not receive an answer.Contact the seller at this e-mail address : xxx@aol.com *** If it was genuine, you'd use the reply button and it would go through the Ebay system... Quote
a4drk Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 In my opinion, i would say it's fine. (I cut & paste the item number into the search & checked the bid history) Basically the 2 bidders above you have decided against it.. IMHO you will probably find that the 2 bidders above you were the sellers mates..... However, if you are still happy to buy it for £700, go for it.... but i would drive to him do a cash deal....... try for less.... david Quote
Mrs Westy Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 ***Do not reply to this email as you will not receive an answer.Contact the seller at this e-mail address : xxx@aol.com *** If it was genuine, you'd use the reply button and it would go through the Ebay system... Not necessarily, sometimes emails from things like this get sent via the central ebay system, so your reply will go back to ebay and not to the seller, IYSWIM. It *could* be genuine, but like you say, the easiest way to be sure is to use the "contact seller" button and ask. Quote
Richgm Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 Looking at the feed back for the seller and the buyer something doesn't add up. Steer clear is my advice. Quote
stubbow Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 Something not right if you check the feedback the item has been collected by the winning bidder and feedback left on the 5th. Maybe its the winning bidder is trying to sell it on to you, but why? is there somthing wrong with it? Danny Quote
markboyce Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 scam would be my first thought. A friend received an email with roughly the same wording after he bid up the item he was selling using someones elses account. In the end his plan failed and he ended up being the highest bidder and also the seller of the item but he still got the email Quote
