Hi there.  Just a quick question on my old man's profile.  I'm a student living in Bath in the City Centre and need to get back and forth to the University (3 miles and up a massive hill) every day.  There is a bus service costing a few hundred a year but being public transport you can wait at least an hour to get home at 5pm.  A car is too expensive (insurance for a 19yo is about £800) and £5 parking in the uni every day.  A scooter is too slow and whinny and may not make it up the hill so I'm thinking road legal quad.  Basically, all I know is that they exist.  Has anyone ever owned one or have any info on t'internet about them?  Can anyone recommend a different form of transport and yes I have considered walking and cycling?

Cheers

I would have thought the insurance on a road legal quad woud have been a bit of a stinger as well. Plus you can bet your life that the Uni will probably want to start charging you a fiver sooner or later  :p

Whats this with unis charging students for parking by the way? I don't remember it happening when I was a student.   (Well, not on campus car parks anyway)

I'd still bet the cheapest motorised transport, (private, that is), would be a scooter/moped/old m.bike.

Mail me off list - I've lived in Bath for donkeys years & have friends who are lecturers @ the Uni (and went there myself years ago).  There's talk (it may have already been implemented) about new students at Bath Uni being obliged to sign something stating they won't bring a car!  The buses up the hill to the Uni are very regular and reliable - it's all the other services which are rubbush!

it will not be a cheap solution, the tyres that quads run on are meant for grass or sand use, take them on tarmac and you can literally watch them wear out, also they handle terrible on hard stuff, borderline dangerous!

also you would look a tit, a chap uses one near us, and although i have one of the honda agricultural type quads, i cant help thinking that the chap with the road legal chinese quad looks a right dick  :D

Can't see why you'd want a quad over a proper bike, except for pose value. As a biker for over 25 years, I'm forced to say it sounds like a daft idea. I reckon you just want to see if one of us can come up with a convincing argument so that the bank or yer dad will fund it :p

In my day, we had to walk 48 miles to college doing a days work on the way to pay for it !  We then had to walk 48 miles back carrying the shopping for 7 local old ladies !  We then got an hours sleep and had to start over again and you want a quad bike  :p  :D  ;)

Go for a scoot, especially one that's easy to de-restrict. My daughter had one for her years in Durham where the hills are not dis-similar to Bath. Only downside was her tax disc got nicked before I put a more difficult to remove one on for her, oh and the noise of a 2-stroke

I had to pay for parking at Uni...

So I always tried to make sure I had a full car, I took as many people as possible from Halls to Uni everyday...(well the ones I woke up for)  :D

Then on a Fri / Sat night if I was lucky enough to spot you in the Bar, I'd get a free pint.

:D  :D

Never counted it all up, but seeing as I had to go there anyway, I'm quite sure the free beer went someway towards covering the cost of parking.

:D  :D  :D
