pistonbroke Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Ted Heath put VAT on yatchs He was a yatchman ! and I think cakes do attract vat. biscuits don't though . wasn't there a recent issue with a certain Co. who argued there cakes where actually bikkies? Or am arang (scots accent) forgive the pun Quote
Blatman Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 United Biscuits/McVities had a bit of a to do with the VAT man regarding Jaffa Cakes, and wether they were cakes or buisuits. How do you tell the difference for reasons of definition? Well, biscuits go soft when they're stale, cakes go hard. To prove the point, UB baked a 12" Jaffa Cake... How do I know? It was a question on QI earlier this week, and I was paying attention... Quote
Blatman Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Jaffa Cakes Government meddling VAT for beginners... Jaffa Cakes are obviously the issue of the day... Quote
CateringVan Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 going back a few postings, blatman said I don't use flame proof underwear. Not even when you're posting on blatchat Quote
Frau Vesty Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 But just to cloud the issue further, Jaffa Cakes are found in the biscuit aisle! Cakes are definitely VAT free, I think non-chocolate biscuits are also VAT free, but chocolate covered biscuits are clearly a luxury item and therefore you pay the extra 17.5% for the privilege. Blatman Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I don't use flame proof underwear. Not even when you're posting on blatchat Well, maybe then, but it's more dangerous than sprinting, to be fair... Quote
Toby Mack Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 not wanting to bring this back on topic but..... blatmans very concise guide missed off fire resistant gloves. Not at all expensive (£20 ish) and good for comfort as well as fire protection. Quote
Blatman Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Yup. Suede gloves for a suede wheel, leather for leather. I use Sparco gauntlets, and throw them down regularly... Quote
Howard Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Try before you buy well in advance. I wouldn't buy any clothing on the net without having felt the quality and tried on the item somewhere first. Having found the product and size you want you can then order over the net and save a lot. Peter Lloyd Rallying (mail order) have very competitive prices. Don't leave it too late. Some places may have to order the kit you want and it can take weeks. Demon Tweeks have lots of gear and all the sizes in stock (so good place to try stuff) but are pricey (MRRP). Howard Quote
