PhilH Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Anyone out there run LPG (Dual fuel)? Is it a good option,Cost, mpg etc Cheers Phil Quote
JeffC Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 would be good cost effective without the filling stations profit margins... bluddy rip off at pump prices, We have lpg central heating in the house costs us 20pence per litre only buying 2,000 litres at a time, so we are not a high user.. at garages is it 35- 40p per litre at the pumps?? .with the amounts a filling station sells they must be paying 10-12p per litre ...they must be laughing every time some one fills up they claim to get very little profits from petrol/diesel but seem to make up for it on the gas ... PhilH Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 Ive never driven an LPG propelled car , do they perform as well and is the mpg as good. Im covering maybe 30000 miles per year and wondered if it really is a viable money saving option on a new car. Phil Quote
pistonbroke Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Had it fitted to Fords at work long long ago ! My advice, dont bother, the installation cost wont benfit you unless your prepared to do vast amounts of agonising miserable low performance engine pinking driving every year . Co. I was with gave it up as unworthy , It would need a lot to persuade me to go with it . Quote
a4gom Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Don't you get the installation subsidised on new cars? I'm sure someone at work only had to pay about £400 towards surely it won't take long to get that back? I've only ever been in a range rover that had been converted and to be honest the difference in power wasn't really that noticable, don't know about mpg though. Quote
V 8 Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Hi phil, I can only talk from my own experience. I run an Omega 2.5 CDX which I converted to LPG. The consumption is approximately 10 to 20% worse and I can't tell any difference in performance at all. The installation cost was £1500 and it paid for itself in 25000 miles. I am now quids in. I have the direct injection type, rather than the original which was one input straight into the plenum chamber. With the difference in cost (40p against 90p) it works out that my car does over 40 to the gallon (cost wise), it actally does about 18. Towing at over 70 mph it does about 12, which still equates to 30ish. The only problem I have found is that the tank, which is a spare wheel replacement, is only 50 litres and your range is limited to 200 miles (120 when towing) and there are not many LPG stations yet. If you have a Tom Tom sat nav, you can get a LPG station database to load on, and be able to locate the nearest at any time. This has been invaluable when away sprinting. (Wonder how the flymo would go on LPG) Richard Green has done it to his Disco aswell and raves about it!! Call me if you want a chat. Edited to add, yes you do get a substantial grant on new cars and cars under a certain age. Quote
PhilH Posted August 13, 2005 Author Posted August 13, 2005 Ok thanks for your comments. This would be on a new car so i will ask various dealers. The manufactures seem to keep it very quiet, you never see anyone flying the LPG flag other than the companys doing the conversions. Phil Quote
Rusty Nuts Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 i remember looking into this when the wife bought her car the goverment does offer subsidy on new cars you have to apply 1st and get a voucher or something there was a small wait she didnt go for it in the end just got a diesel so if you are intrested do the research 1st and speak to the manufacturer of the vehicle ie local garage shindha Quote
Mark B Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 My dad has a 2.5 V6 Omega with lpg conversion, runs well on lpg if anything is a bit smoother on it, works out good value as he tows with it alot aswell. Just watch you don't run out of gas otherwise it can cause damage to the induction system & various sensors if it backfires. You can buy a map in most petrol stations (saw on in morrisons yesterday) for about £6 which lists all the LPG stations in the UK, very handy. Quote
Tony wright Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 I have 2 Toyotas running on lpg, have done 55000miles in the Avensis and 95000 in the Carina. I guess it speaks for itself. We are paying 29.9p litre from Morrisons which equals £1.35 per gallon. Diesel costs £4.27 per gallon, I can get 3.16 gallons for £4.27. My mpg works out at 28 for £1.35 or 88 for £4.27. Cheapest and best way I can see driving any vehicle. You will get your money back for the conversion within 15000 miles. But be very careful what car you have converted, not recommended for Fords because of valve problems I have heard. Tony Quote
flanker7 Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 I run one of my Jaguar XJ8s on LPG after some initial problems it now runs great. I have an account with country wide and pay 30p approx per litre. If you do a lot of miles like me its well worth it. Quote
PhilH Posted August 13, 2005 Author Posted August 13, 2005 am thinkin new Passat or C class or BM 320 all diesel. I would have thought there is a benefit tax wise to run cleaner.I am testing them next week so will see what the dealers come up with. Phil Quote
