Boomy Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 ..well we had the superb GTR, a game i played online quite a few times with mates and loved every minute of. With a decent wheel the thing just oozed realism and spanking even the slower lotus type cars around various tracks with 10+ friends got the heart racing no end. Before that we had the rather incredible GPL (grand prix legends) which took us back to the early days of 60's monsters and left people stunned at just how realistic a game can feel and sound.Still today, years after it was released it is one of the most advanced PC sims around with totaly revamped updates in terms of graphics and tweaks being released almost weekly by hardcore fans who will settle for nothing less.Trying to learn the 14 mile long Nurburgring for example in a car with huge BHP, rather crap tyres, not very good brakes and handling that felt like a granada estate at times was a joy : p But now, we have another newcomer to the PC racing sim market, the follow up to GTR, namely GTL. The demo is out soon with the game scheduled for October some time and despite the fact nothing will ever beat the thrill of driving your beloved Westys through the twisties, games such as these with a decent setup can entertain in just as many ways. pistonbroke Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Thanks , but ........... A bit to much playstationesque for my taste Ill stick with me good old GPL (The only proper racing simm ) Just off for a quick lap of Cadwell in me Coop Quote
Boomy Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 I honestly thought nothing would come close to GPL without some major input and effort from developers, but GTR is simply fantastic and shows they made that effort. Quite a few of the people i know online play very seriously and it got to the point where you were talking fractions of a second differences lap after lap on all the tracks in all the cars. You would have to push, fight and take late braking chances just to beat your own lap times, often resulting in spin offs and lock ups etc.You knew the wrong gear or wrong amount of pressure on the brakes would mean the car behind would juuuust creep past on the next straight if he got it right.Fantastic stuff but in modern day cars and certainly nothing like the console racers! So while i agree GPL is virtually as good as it gets, GTR and GTL no doubt are/will be totaly on par with that in my opinion. That is of course if the cars flick your switch so to speak. I will admit though that they feel like totaly different games purely due to the realism extended to the way the cars feel and drive. So, if you prefer that GPL feeling, more modern day racers will aways feel second best i guess. There is a place in my heart for many a race game so long as it doesn't have rockets or bonkers boost options.GT4, Forza, the toca series on the pc...all have taken up some of my time over the years, but GTL is looking more and more like the type of game i have waited for for years.Especially with the new hardware to push it along and make it look so pretty Quote
Peter Cox Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I'd buy one...then again I bought a light blue and white small checked crepe jacket and trousers with cream shoes at the height of a new romantic summer Quote
Eddy5 Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Another recommendation is Live for Speed. Excellent online racing, it's the best fun I've had with a racing game. And it has Westfield type cars in it (LX4 and LX6) Live For Speed Cheap as well at £24 for S1 and S2 Quote
pistonbroke Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 So, if you prefer that GPL feeling, more modern day racers will aways feel second best i guess. Dam right Cheap as well at £24 for S1 and S2 GPL for around £8 and you can update the simm to all the latest whistes and bells FOC Quote

Blatman Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Looks like the Jag is suffering from a touch of turn in understeer... Quote
Boomy Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 Looks like the Jag is suffering from a touch of turn in understeer... It's actually suffering from "i couldn't be bothered to set up my steering wheel just yet and was using a pad" It's also worth mentioning the night and day time scale which you can adjust. You can set it up in the demo to start off racing at night and then watch the sun come up, a very nice experience as you flick your headlights on or off accordingly. Quote
