nigelh Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 Finally got a date for SVA at Chadderton Had to change it to Speke as I'm not in the country for the original appointment Any pointers for Speke, what they like to see, what they don't like to see would be greatly appreciated. Also...on the off chance it passes (optimism @ 50% with one week to go ) what is the correct liquid to christen the new car with? Champagne? Coffee? Fizzy water? or good old fashioned beer? Please don't suggest blood as it's had enough of that during the build Cheers, Nigel Quote
steve_m Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 what is the correct liquid to christen the new car with? A good dose of Optimax and a blast in the country ! Quote
MAT1800 Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 Hi Nigel, I had a small bottle of champagne, chilled in the fridge ready to christen the car when it passed. You've just reminded me it's still there! ! ! These are the things you think of prior to SVA, after SVA all you think about is drving it. Got to be the best way of christening it. On another point, although I found people I delt with at Manchester SVA very helpfull etc etc, it did take me over 2 weeks after SVA before I finally had a visit, although I was then able to pick up the paper work that afternoon, and the plates from Halfrauds, Which took over 1 hour to make !!! I Hate staff training !!! But I read on here about a couple of people who drove staight to the DVLA centre and got the plates there and then, so you might be better trying another DVLA office as well ? ? ? Oh and there are other ways of christening a car, but considering the size of a Westi, I'd suggest you'd have to be very flexible Mat Quote
nigelh Posted August 9, 2005 Author Posted August 9, 2005 In a Westfield? How flexible? With my back? Should have kept the engine hoist....just in case I am going back to work the day after the test so pass or fail I probably won't tax it till sept. anyhow. Unless.... someone can convince me that the first blat is worth a months tax and the grief/aggrovation of getting plates. Optimism now at 60%. It can't last!! Quote
MAT1800 Posted August 9, 2005 Posted August 9, 2005 Wait a month? Only got two words to say about that....HEAT WAVE. Mat. Quote
nigelh Posted August 10, 2005 Author Posted August 10, 2005 Cheers Matt, Common sense and reason will probably prevail. I just hope it's not a permanent condition I've caught. Went for MOT this afternoon. I must have taken a wrong turn or two and clocked up 10 miles Car passed Even the brakes, which,to be honest I don't think are that good...shows what I know! Optimism now at 75% Quote
nigelh Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 OH YES!! Back home from Speke before 12.00 with a PASS certificate. Celebrations so far have consisted of a mug of tea and a Hobnob (chocolate...obviously). Much beer planned for later! Big thank you to everyone who helped/supported/cajoled especially SWMBO and the Flatbush National Bank of New York (inventors of the credit card). Quote
Mark B Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Congratulations Nige, Hope to see you as usual but complete with car at the next Cheshire meet. Quote
KerryS Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Brilliant - another Westy nearly born. May be worth giving a summary of what went on for other's benefit. It certainly helped me and jak get first time passes in Derby/Notts Kerry S Quote
nigelh Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Thanks Fellahs What went on?? Memory fading already.... and I've not had sleep or alchohol yet Arrived early (20 mins.) They seemed to like this as it gives time for unloading the car and a bit of social chit chat. All the examiners had a walk round it whilst drinking coffee and making appreciative noises. I was then issued with a rather fetching HiVis vest and it was game on. Wheel centres, bonnet and boot box were removed and he had a good poke around resulting in 1 cable tie being required to tidy up HT leads. Next, brake test, underside inspection, emmissions and all lights checked....no worries. Only snag came when doing the speedo check. At 40mph speedo read 35mph He apologised !?! and asked if there was anything I could do? Rang W/F (twice ) to get other pulse settings. He kept saying "don't worry we've got plenty of time", eventually got it reading right and I don't know who was happier me or him BIG thanks to Mark @ W/F at this point That just left weighing, measuring, mirrors and self centering on the steering to check...all with no problems. He wasn't even phased when the bl**** thing did'nt stop when he turned it off. He climbed out saying "and thats how you pass an SVA" My jaw is now aching 'cos I can't stop grinning Just for the record I used a pulse setting of 2950 with the pick up on the prop shaft...reads 2mph over actual speed. Glen H Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Congratulations Nigel Next Hurdle, Registration. Only advice I can give is have evrything filed in a neat and orderly manner, this includes all receipts etc. In Particular have the receipts to the front for the following; Chassis, the one indicating the chassis number from westfield. The Engine, again with engine number. The steering components. The rear axle The Transmission and I think the brakes. You usually have to sign a form declaring whether thes parts were new, the engine/chassis numbers and the origin of purchase. Oh and treat them like god, most of them are from another world anyway Quote
nigelh Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Cheers Glen, Paperwork is NOT my forte, I just hope I've not thrown anything away How's your rebuild going? Quote
MAT1800 Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Well done Nigel ! ! First time as well, I'm glad your not the type to be smug Hope the registration goes as well, looking forward to seeing the car. Roll on the next meet! Mat. Quote
