Broke my old I-drive this week - it finally gave up the ghost after exhibiting a small crack for about 4 years by shearing the "seatpost" (just above main pivot) right around. So - time for something new! Budget = small-ish (only just got new job after 6 months' unwashedness) No old components to be carried over unless I really have to. HotWheels (GT importer) have sold out of 2005 ID5's which would have been the nearest thing - 2006 stock not due until Sept-Oct at the earliest & I would be able to get a frame only deal @ c.£350 for frame (no shock! Chain Reaction also have ID5s in my size Here for £550 frame and shock. They've offered a Mongoose Teocali instead, which use the same sort of BB isolation as the new i-drive GTs. Here Dunno on price yet. Bit minging looking, but getting a good write up everywhere. Other ideas I've had: Trek Fuel 55 (2004) frame & shock for £500. 4.5" to 5.5" adjustable. Some scare stories about breakages but most reports seem quite good. Scott Nitrous 10 (2004) frame and shock for £500-£650 7" travel and (strangely enough) lighter than the Trek… Plush, but maybe too plush? here Club Roost XS Freeride frame and shock £550 but have seen absolutely no reviews on this thing Here , apart from one guy saying the back end is very flexy. Next year's Giant on the Maestro platform looks quite good too… pushing the budget though at £1250 & with no discounts…. Or….. I'm hoping to jump up from v-brakes to discs as well. General type of riding is xc, occasional DH and small drops, also commuting every now and then. steveb Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 due to lack of cash and two broken wrists I recently sold my Kona Stab downhill bike and replaced it with an on-one Inbred geared bike. £400 fully ridgid steel lightweight frame, real old school but really well kitted out deore groupset, planet x disc hubs, disc mounts on frame and fork and all the runners are hydraulic ready. All the finishing kit is nice, azonic copy bars etc bargin. More comparable to £1000 bikes from bigger companies. Quote

Mmmm, have been 1/2 tempted to go back to rigid with a steel frame. Have built up my 'spare' bike now (HT Alu frame) so am expecting a sore body from my next ride! Might see how things go with that for a week or two... It's hard enough choosing between the F/S rigs without thinking about rigids as well. It's been a long time since I frequented LBS's & it continues to amaze me how bad most of them are. I mean, I know they get a lot of tyre kickers but I am in the market to spend 1k ish; possibly on "parts" (which they make more money on) and all I seem to get saddled with are strategically shaved monkeys who just offer no opinion and repeat back whatever I say! At least one bloke (Pembroke in Liverpool) had the guts to tell me to go find what I wanted, then give him a ring & he'd try and beat the deal. Not amazing service, but at least he tried to close for the business. Anybody got any of these bikes? Quote

Anybody got any of these bikes? yeah, big change riding it from what i'd got used too i did have the stab with boxxers and long travel kit so 7" travel front and rear and a road bike. But road bike got stolen and the stab had stopped being raced or used at all to be honest so the old school MTB made sense. Its odd but it actually feels harsher than the road bike was and i have lost all skill riding it, i just need to practise I guess. One thing its obviously better at than other front suspension bikes and cross country setup bikes I have had it the way it rides smooth dry forest paths it is soo easy to get it going really fast and keep speed up. Quite a long wheel base on it make it nice and stable. Quote
