michelle Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I am currently building a 1800Q westie. I have got the carbon rear light kit unfortunatley I have no idea how to fit them. looks so simple I know. Can anyone give me some ideas. Quote
Paul Ash Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Masking tape where light fits & also along top & bottom of pod unit. Mark on pod unit where holes are in relation to edge. Offer unit up to car check fit etc, file modify as reqd. When happy mark the 4 hole marks across onto rear wing. Draw araound light unit. Take pod out of the way, Measure how far holes are in from each mark and measure from outline drawn on wing. drill 4 fixing holes. Fit pod unit, with m5 dome headed bolts supplied in kit. Mark centre of holes that need cutting out for lamp units. Drill 2 x 44mm holes through wing after removing pod. Any worries drop me a mail and I'll sort some pics. Just done them today on my car Regards Paul Quote
adhawkins Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Hi Michelle, I see you are in Gloucester. Why not pop along to our local club meet at the Highwayman on the A417 North of Cirencester? Last Thursday of the month, so you've just missed July's meet. There's usually a few cars kicking around to take a look at, and someone is bound to have done this before, so can give you some first hand advice. Andy Quote
michelle Posted July 31, 2005 Author Posted July 31, 2005 Paul Thanks for your quick reply. I think I might have some bits missing for my lights, surely there should be some kind of rubber mounting or seal that goes behind the carbon light. I would definately appreciate a photo if you have one. Andy I did go to the last meet at the highwayman, which was fantastic and really good to have a look at what other people have done, it was also a good way of trying to get hubby into westies as he was not so keen up untill then, however we are just about to move to Cornwall next week, and I have persuaded him to join the Cornwall branch, when we get down there. thanks Michelle Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I think I might have some bits missing for my lights, surely there should be some kind of rubber mounting or seal that goes behind the carbon light. Nope, all you get are the pods the lamps/bulbs and the bolts. Some of the factory cars do appear to have rubber trim/edging fitted, but most people don't seem to use any. One tip though, if like many you file/trim the pod to get a neat fit against the bodywork, don'g go taking them off again later on to do other jobs. I did, and i've nevr got them back on again in the same place since One of these days I'll re-fit mine and trim them again. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 there should be some kind of rubber mounting or seal that goes behind the carbon light I think the u shaped rubber is available from woolies (not woolworths) trim people Quote
Paul Ash Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 If you want to put a U-edge section on it try "Ray Rim" from RS components. You fit it & then heat it like heat shrink, it is impregnated with glue so it sticks itself on. Quote

michelle Posted August 1, 2005 Author Posted August 1, 2005 Moving to St Agnes, where abouts do you meet in Cornwall. Very friendly bunch in Gloucester. Thanks for the tips with the lights will give it a go. I have however found some U shaped rubber in the SVA kit that fits a treat I will give that a go in the morning. Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 Got a tip for fitting the carbon effect rear lights. If you dont want to cut the two large holes behind the light unit and especially the one which goes through the main body tub fit the 95mm Ultra Bright LED Units from SVC These need the light surround to be cut out internally but you can fit without destroying the bodywork. Just fitted these tonight and I must say they look the dog's!! Wish I new this first as I went through the sva with the normal light not nowing the LED's are E marked Barry Quote
injidup Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Barry, What do you think of the LED lights? Are they as bright as regular lamps? I'm thinking of getting some for my carbon-look pods... Cheers, Kev Quote
