Lads and lasses,

Am selling some items on ebay.  A chap has asked if he may bid from France and if successful, pay by bank account wire transfer.

Not familiar with this process at all, can anything dodgy occur?

Thanks in advance,

Rich.

Yup, dodginess can occur. Tell him credit card via PayPal or no deal...

I have read that Western union money transfer is to be avoided, not sure at an electronic bank transfer in general though.  Have you tried the E-bay forum, I seem to recall they had some guidnace on payments methods.

The "wire transfer" phrase sets alarm bells ringing for me. I'll bet if you say yes, the reply will, as Coxy says, include the phrase Western Union...

I sold my exhaust silencer to a chap in Holland and in the end we used an electronic money transfer with no problems. I asked my bank (NatWest) for my international bank account number (IBAN), something like NWGB****account number**. I then passed this on along with my address and payment was received fine. The only problem was that I forgot about exchange rates/fees so it cost me an extra £7. I'd also find out about postage as it can be quite a lot. (£35 to send a silencer air mail to Holland - unless the bloke doesn't mind waiting a while for a cheaper option).

If I had an option I would prefer to sell in this country and avoid any hassles.

Cheers

Kev.

If I did a wire transfer to you, which I didn't. I made a direct payment :)

I don't know if PayPal is that much better though; there seem to be a few scams/dodgy deals with them as well.

Yeah, but credit card payments offer protection for all. If you get a payment from a stolen credit card, whilst it may be a bit of extra hassle, you should still receive your money. I agree that there may be the possibility of PayPal to PayPal payment problems, but credit cards *should* be safer for all concerned. IMO of course...

As Chappers has done, I sold my old steering wheel to a chap from Sweden a few months back, he transferred the money in gbpounds into my account after I'd given him by IBAN and another number (can't remember the name of it now), it's a perfectly legal & acceptable way of transferring money. (It's just internet banking at the end of the day) Just took a few days to clear.

I've sold stuff on Ebay and recieved a payment into my paypal account, 1 day later the credited amount was frozen and eventually withdrawn, I complained but never got the money. Luckily for me I hadn't sent the item so all I lost was the ebay fees. This was pre ebay & paypal joining so eby wouldn't give me my fees back.

I also sold some gp4 mkII arches to a chap in sweden who paid direct into my account, I never got charged for it he transfered it in sterling so presumably he will have been charged.

Was that me? Can't remember who it was I bought it from. But I did the wire transfer.

My bank wanted IBAN and BIC code as well as bank name, address and obviously receivers name and account no. Actually I did the whole transfer online through my online bank. Very easy to do and quick. Fixed price also. Paypal takes a percentage so if you've got expensive stuff, Paypal can sometimes not be the cheapest method.

As a general principle, cash first, goods later. and as always, ye pays yer money and ye takes yer chances...

Western Union is only doggey if you pay by it not receive it.

The reason it is dodgey sending money this way is because the person can just go into a Western union branch and pick up the money and disapear.
