Nick M Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 You can't close roads in the UK. It's political suicide. They won't allow it. So politics is more important than getting the job done properly and in a sensible time frame ? Quote
cidersurfer Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 To the decision makers... Yes, it is. Unfortunately, short term views for short term politics, they only care about three years. Quote
Nick M Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I guess my point was, why have we let a situation develop where politicians get involved in the actual practicalities of construction projects Quote

Blatman Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I guess my point was, why have we let a situation develop where politicians get involved in the actual practicalities of construction projects That's kinda the point. If "we" had any influence in this so called "democracy", then plenty of situations wouldn't have got so bad. Sadly, politicians do only what will keep themselves in power, and not the bidding of the people. They are the servants of the people in theory only... Quote
Blatman Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 To be honest I fully expect the olympics to cost Britain a fair few quid and that there will be all manner of political wranglings, mud-slinging, cost over-runs, etc., etc. But maybe, just maybe, people might discover a bit of pride in the way we put on the show and really get behind our team, rather than grumbling about everything and poo-poohing their efforts. It's a great opportunity for Britain - let's not spoil it by complaining about it already.... But you argue the counter point so well... I think part of the problem is a) we've forgotten how to build, but more importantly manage the build process, big one-off things like Wembley stadium, b) there's too many people with too much self interest involved in all of those projects and c) there's too much focus on people wanting to make lots of money out of the projects and forgetting that they're also supposed to deliver on their side of the deal. Not to mention the evils of politics getting brought into the equation.... We've *learned* that in the UK over the last 10 to 15 years, with things that are done "for the people" like new stadia, roads etc etc, that we don't get good value for moey, and to compound that our money gets further wasted by blown budgets, and the ensuing public enquiry. No-one ever awards us our costs back when "we" win. Cynical? Undoubtedly. Dissappointed that I feel this way? Too right. I so want to be proved wrong, but in the meantime, I'll remain sceptical. I of course reserve the right to be proved wrong... Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted July 7, 2005 Posted July 7, 2005 Too many so called clever people having meetings about having more meetings, and bullsh*tting about what they're gonna do and how they're gonna do it, then they leave no time for the tradesmen to do their bit, then they blame the tradesmen and call them a load of lazy p155 b*astards Quote

I CAN'T WAIT (except that I will have just turned 50 by the time it all happens !!!! Hear, Hear... Normally most of this country is very apathetic to most things, but it really did fill me with pride to see all those people in London, and other places, party like mad because we'd won. I think it will be a great oppourtunity for this country to show what we can really do, after all we did the the Commonwealth Games in Manchester and most people would agree we made a damn fine job of it. Something I'd be interested to know though, do all these Stadiums, etc have to go through normal planning procedures? After all we have won the games, the have to be built, surely they won't let some local planning officer balls it all up because he don't like the colour of the brickwork or something... Quote
