hilux Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Ahem............. i`m not knocking it, I think its great, really great..................................................................................... ......................................BUT Millenium Dome Cardiff Stadium killed Laing Construction Wembley Stadium is killing its consortium Manchester City stadium is a legal nightmare Portugal built ALL their euro 2004 stadia (yes thats right, stadia, plural) for the cost of Wembley and/or the millenium dome. If it goes well its fantastic however I feel that we could and probably will embarrass ourselves on a world stage. Remember this....................if we f*ck up then Tony and friends will simply bill us in our wage packets. I honestly believe it was France`s until that tw*t Chirac opened his big mouth. Quote
david.c Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I honestly believe it was France`s until that tw*t Chirac opened his big mouth. If only 'Spitting Image' was still around................they could have endless fun with this David Quote
Nick M Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Millenium Dome Cardiff Stadium killed Laing Construction Wembley Stadium is killing its consortium Manchester City stadium is a legal nightmare Portugal built ALL their euro 2004 stadia (yes thats right, stadia, plural) for the cost of Wembley and/or the millenium dome. I think part of the problem is a) we've forgotten how to build, but more importantly manage the build process, big one-off things like Wembley stadium, b) there's too many people with too much self interest involved in all of those projects and c) there's too much focus on people wanting to make lots of money out of the projects and forgetting that they're also supposed to deliver on their side of the deal. Not to mention the evils of politics getting brought into the equation.... Cut out the "wasted" costs like consultants and all the other parasites, trim back on some of the fancy features and just build a functional building and hey presto, it's done on time and in budget. Never amazes me how long projects like road construction take, when the private sector can tear down and rebuild an office building in London in half the time. Quote
Jan Coombes Posted July 6, 2005 Author Posted July 6, 2005 I honestly believe it was France`s until that tw*t Chirac opened his big mouth. I like Chirac, his got balls to stand up for his country. Don't get me wrong I hate the french I think the best bit about today news was we beet the French but the fack Chirac can stand up and say do you know what thats not good for France so feck off. Tony Blair could learn a lot. I'd sort this counrty out vote JAN Quote
Mark Stanton Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Tony Blair could learn a lot. Have we got enough time for that Quote

Nick M Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I was thinking more of the actual construction bit of the process. Motorways in France = build them quickly, build them well, but charge for them. Interstates in the US = locally the repairs / resurfacing of about 100 miles of 3 to 4 lane motorway has taken significantly less than a year. They close the bit they're working on over the weekend and it's open again for business on Monday morning. Motorways in the UK = have two blokes standing around trying to look busy, cone off 50 miles of motorway to repair a small pot-hole and it takes 9 months to do it at a cost of 10 billion quid. Quote
old(wo)man Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 All that stuff you just said Exactly - and you wonder why people were being cynical in the other thread... Quote
Nick M Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 To be honest I fully expect the olympics to cost Britain a fair few quid and that there will be all manner of political wranglings, mud-slinging, cost over-runs, etc., etc. But maybe, just maybe, people might discover a bit of pride in the way we put on the show and really get behind our team, rather than grumbling about everything and poo-poohing their efforts. It's a great opportunity for Britain - let's not spoil it by complaining about it already.... Quote
cidersurfer Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 15 years planning them without involving the company that will actually build it and then 1 year to build it. The logic defies me. Thank god the HA are changing their procurement processes with the introduction of the CAT and ECI. Quote
cidersurfer Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 You can't close roads in the UK. It's political suicide. They won't allow it. Quote
