???   My Westfield is in for some repairs in a friends garage and when he took the engine out he discovered that the engine number has been ground off. On the log book the engine number reads SA*** (3 digits)  and thats it. Seems a bit strange to say the least.

Does that mean that the engine is a dodgy one or is there another reason why? I only bought it a couple of months ago and its basicly needed everything rebuilding, reconditioning or replacing engine/gear box and clutch wise. My mechanic mate (who thankfully isnt going to charge me a fortune for all the work he has done says that it is a good engine but whoever assembled the running gear was a complete **** and the reason for the damage to certain parts has been caused by this.

Feel angry towards the guy I bought it off, not sure what path Im going to take yet

Has the Engine Number been Re-stamped or Just Ground off Completely  ???

Also what Engine is it  ???

Date stamp:  SA   on a Ford refers to:  March 1976

More Info' would Help...

Some engine builders work on exchange ie they work on blocks all the time, and as long as you supply one, you will get one back - but not necessarily the same as you gave them.  Hence they grind off the engine numbers.  Not sure of the legality, but you can always re-stamp the engine!

Thanks Dickie - I can get it re stamped no bother but does the engine number sound right to you SA*** (3 digits). I thought they were all longer?

As long as the engine agrees with the log book...

If it bothers you then I would re stamp it the same number as you have declared in the log book otherwise you will have to re register.

fwiw The engine in my SeiW has replaced there is no no on the block at present it has not caused me any problems

I think it is fairly common with the marque the only prob i could forsee might have to do with polution test at MOT but then any station worth there salt will know requirement for a Pinto  !

That's about the right amount of digits for a ford engine number, on a ford it's always the last few digits of the chassis number of the car is was originally fitted to.

I'd just restamp the block, you can buy the kits from machine mart etc.

:D  :D  Thanks guys your have put my mind at rest - my mate will just stamp it for me with the no thats in the log book.

Was just worried the cops would take a look at a ground off engine number and confiscate it.

Thanks for your help :D

Yep, Get it Stamped.

Think i Read something on the MOT Testers site about Engine Numbers being checked as part of the New computerised MOT test, the Number would have to match what they have on record at Swansea.

I wouldnt re stamp it - it may look fraudulent - one day you may want to sell it, I would be very suspicious of a re stamped block. As I would with no engine number. I recomends a tentative phone call to you local SVA/MOT centre

My logbook dosent have an engine number but the car does.

some blocks, after a skim will loose it's number anyway, like crossflows.

Interested to know how you would tell the difference ?

perhaps a label on the engine  "warning" , "this block has been re stamped"

Apparently there are ways and means of re stamping it to make it look like the original stamp, I'll let you know if it look a load of S**TE or not :D  :D

It sounds as though its a common thing for Kit Cars so I imagine its not going to be a big problem for re-sale.

As someone mentioned earlier, with the new MOT computers being installed around the country you have to enter the Engine number into the system that matches what is on the engine and at Swansea - or thats the idea anyway

My block came from the states with no number on it just stamped a no on it which fitted in with my emissions.

I understand it is legal to stamp an engine all you are doing is giving it an identifying no to check against the log book.

I think the engine no scene will give the dvla and mot department a real headace but ho hum not my problem
