Bearing caps

Hi All,

Nice plated black hubs - nice black bearing caps.

How do I fit them without me loosing my temper and resorting to large hammer?  ???

Also just changed my front closed wheel nuts to open ones - they have one thread showing still :(  Now this doesn't look good. And probably won't go through scrutineering?  ???

Solution 1 longer wheel studs - would protrude through wheel so no go.

Solution 2 smaller wheel nuts?  What size has everybody got? Mine are tapered for CXR's BTW.

P.S.

Already lost my temper but haven't resorted to large hammer........yet  :D

Use a socket that fits over the cap but sits on the outer lip. Give this a tap with a mallet.

With regards to the wheel nuts, can you not just shorten the nuts? Mine nuts used to be closed ends and quite long but I had the ends  turned off in a lathe to make them open and shorter for this very reason.

Hi John,

I'll give the socket method a go tonight. Was trying a block of wood across the flat dome last night though.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone with (quick) access to a lathe. It would have to be a local engineering company which would be more costly than buying new shorter ones.

Hi a4gom,

I only use the angle grinder on SVA parts :D  That's my local engineering company "Bodge and SVA It".

Stuff staying for racing is first class. My :arse: depends on it  :D

Hi YouMustBeJoking,

Ask the scrutineer - they don't like it. It doesn't look nice aesthetically to my eyes. Just like the SVA man likes to see three threads showing on all suspension bolts.

I'm just a (poor) mechanic when it comes down to it. Any engineers out there?  ???

P.S.

My biggest socket is 36mm and would not fit over the bearing cap. Any other ideas?  ??? I even tried to fit the cap to a spare ali hub on my workbench (to see more easily where I was going wrong) - not a chance just goes in at an angle!

Help!  :durr:

Hi Danny,

Yep. Did that last night. And applied grease to inside of hub. I think the next step maybe to sand the coating away on the inside of the hubs  :(

Any other ideas most welcome..........  :)

you mention the hubs are black, have they been powder coated? If so then you will have to remove the coating from the inside edge as the cap is a tight fit without the coating so you have no chance of getting them on with a couple of  mm less.

Hi Danny,

Yep there is a coating. I don't think it's powder - plating or whatever they do to colour ali. It'll take up some space though so I'll be sanding away tonight.

Trouble is - the spare one I tried on the bench has no coating - and I still had problems.

Hi,

I have ordered some scrappy wheel nuts from Ike @ Escort Developments. Original metric Ford open variety are only 20mm long instead of the 25mm ones from Rally Design / WF etc..... So will not overhang stud, there black (or will be after clean up and paint) same as my wheels  :)
