judder Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 I got a huge load of tar on the tub tonight and need to know quickly if its ok to remove it with cellulose thinners or will it mark the gel coat ? Thanks Stevie Quote
scott beeland Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 Tar comes off GRP lovely with "Bug Wipes" from tesco/Petrol stations Quote
Paul Ash Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 IMHO I wouldnt put cellulose anywhere near it. Quote
philsugrue Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 hi, i've used cellulose on the GRP of my Westy and it DID NOT damage it at all, if in doudt try it on an inconspicuous part of the car, cheers phil Quote
oioi Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 i find mixing them with a good tonic helps, none of the cheap tescos ownbrand crap, a proper tonic, something that still has quinine in (surprisingly waitrose comes high on my survey) and they will taste loverly Quote
judder Posted June 17, 2005 Author Posted June 17, 2005 oioi you are on something arn't you ? Thanks Phil, I did try it on a hidden area, and it came off with ease, but I bricked it in the end in favour of the bug wash - harder going. The run was worth it though - outstanding 80 miles of twisty country roads then long straights, might organise a local run there. Hope the tyres grip better once the tar hardens - got quite a build up , will have to recalibrate the speedo Quote
oioi Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 oioi you are on something arn't you ? life (you did say "in for something" ddint you?) Quote
oioi Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 you never know life inside is very comftroble these days, espcially if you only crime is a (french accent required) ponchant for chicken. of course the other inmates beat me sensless, but hey thats what i pay them for Quote
Matt Crisp Posted June 17, 2005 Posted June 17, 2005 use the cellulose. its not paint, its gell coat. Quote
pistonbroke Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 I would say definatley NOT cellulose thinners will dissolve gel coat , might not do any harm on old well cured gel but I would be very wary of long term effects . have u tried white spirit ? whichever you use I would wash off after with plenty of soapy water Edit to say Ckikens = quite harmless male of species loves to show off Quote
markboyce Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 WD40 removes it with no effect on the Gel Coat Quote
JeffC Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 thinners wont harm gel coat, if it did you wouldnt be able to repaint a westy.. best thing for removing tar is......Tar and glue remover or in its cheapest form panel wipe ... the stuff you use to remove waxes/silcones before painting... or petrol does the same job... Quote
judder Posted June 18, 2005 Author Posted June 18, 2005 Thanks for all the replies guys, I'll use panel wipe to get thre remainder off Quote
