Looking forward to having some fun!

I have bought an 89 westfield, the engine's are out of the car, one's a 1660 xflow, the other (which will be refitted) is a 1700 xflow, stage 2 head (I think), nice cam, twin delorto carb's. A 2000E quick shift gearbox and all the nesessary's, alt, manifold's etc. I have never attempted an engine rebuild and refit. I think I will have some fun. I have the car now, the engine's I will have later this week. I am very glad I found this forum as I expect I may need some educating and a lot of help/advice. Looking forward to starting just slightly worried about making a mess of a very nice looking car. I received a quote from a local engine specialist for a turn key job on the car and was quoted (worse case) 600 pounds (without setting up carb's). I have decided to attempt the job myself, not so much to save money but for the experience.

Regards C

Good luck. If the chassis was built for that engine and gearbox then you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Have a go, you'll suprise yourself and the satisfaction will be great! A friend of mine built a chevy small block engine from a book, he was chuffed to bits - he's now building a Gardner Douglas Cobra replica

Thanks for that, a question if I may? Can I buy the required spares for the rebuild ie. oil seals, gasket set, piston rings etc easily? A link or just some supplier names would be really helpfull, and if I attempt to strip, clean and rebuild the carb's will I fail?

Thanks in advance C

Welcome!

Try Burton Power as a starting point. Get them to send a catalogue, it's easier to read than the website :)

Just spent the last couple of weeks helping put the top end of a similar spec engine back together, good fun to do. Half the number of valaves makes life a bit easier, as does the timeing side being on the lower half of the engine.

Great moment when we got it started; x-flow on twin 40's, very nostalgic. The car, (a narrow SE from the early '90's) seems nice and lightweight too. The car's great fun, we took it up to Plays Kool last Friday for a quick chassis set up, and to get the tin sump swapped for a baffled cast aly job.

I think most of the bits to get it back together again came from Burton's, with the exception of new front brakes, (calipers, discs and pads) from Brakes International, and replacement front brake hoses from Westfield.

Could't believe it when we were flushing the old brake fluid out, the rear stuff actually came out black!

Welcome

Thats the same engine carb setup I've got also in an 89se.

The performance will supprise you and other westfield owners (Chaz)

Just changing the head gasket on mine pretty easy job really.

A good local motor factors will be able to get you exhaust gaskets sump gaskets rocker cover gaskets and things. For headgasket etc Vulcan are really good.    :t-up:

Also Put Dellorto into google on there website is a guide to stripping and cleaning the carbs and refurb kits.

I haven't had the balls to undertake it myself yet though as there is alot of bits to lose  :suspect:

Good on 'ya and welcome aboard.  :D

Three months ago I had'nt done anything more than an oil change.  I've now had my 16v engine in and out about six times, stripped the head etc and had bits and peices all over the place!!

Im now planning on rebuilding my spare VX engine over the next few months  ;)

Have a go, you'll find you'll learn one hell of alot

:p

Plenty of people here will help you out with any questions..... we're a nice bunch really
