lewey
Just got MBE 3d ignition to replace 15 year old mbe 2d on 20XE. I live east/in Birmingham and have been looking for a rolling road place to get it mapped. I am also almost convinced I will need new jets for my Dellortos as my progression is crap, so need someone who can sort the same time. I have rung the recommended Hi-Tech motorsport in Cradley Heath and they want £250 +VAT and parts and 2 days. 2 days? Reasoning being the car will get warm(! and require cooling between sessions. Having read a hundred posts on rolling roads from the archives to familiarise myself with the rolling road proceedure, this is not something that has come up. Many people say something like "3 hours and £85 and it was going great." Another choice I have is a brand new Sun dyno system that is at "Mini Specialists" in Erdington. They have excellent "£55 for 2 hour" type rates and very pleasant staff. The guy there says £140ish plus parts. He has no experience of mbe and after I spoke to him, he rang me back to say he had ordered their kit to enable mapping and when did I want to come in?! He obviously has little experience of mapping and it is all a steep learning curve for him as his kit is brand new, although he says I won't leave unhappy and is clearly prepared to pull the stopps out to get a good result and won't charge me per hour. Should I go with a guy with little practical experience, or is specific practical experience of the 20XE essential for good mapping? + What is people's opinion of the Hi-tech quote? markboyce
Hi-Tech charged me the same to get my XE mapped using David Hennessy's system a couple of years back Other chap could be good bet if he understands what needs to be done and just has to learn the software. chappers
Northampton Motorsport have all the equipment for MBE ECU remapping, and after having a quick look at their website under Rolling Road, they also carry all in stock a full range of Webber and Dellorto jets. I and a number of people would thoroughly recommend them. Might be worth having a chat with Troy. Cheers Kev.
Blatman
I am also almost convinced I will need new jets for my Dellortos as my progression is crap Not sure how fitting new jets helps with the opening of the butterflies in the carb. Jets and progression are not linked in any meaningful way... As for the price, if the MBE is coming blank then it could well take 2 days to *properly* map it. If it's coming with a *close* base map for your application, then it should take a lot less time. Chappers suggestion of going to Northampton Motorsport is one reccommendation I wholeheartedly agree with.
lewey
The box is coming with xe map, similar to my engine, although a bit tamer. Northapmton Motorsport gave me another hefty quote, but say 4 hours or so should do it which seems more practical. They seem the most confident in sorting it all out so far and the sensible time scale will allow me to stay to monitor the car and costs. I think mini specialists could be underquoting as he doesn't know what's involved and may not be used to the idea of hundreds of map sites. Can't believe he's gone and bought mbe software package and dellorto gaskets in preparation of me coming and I haven't even booked yet! Guilt. That's too keen even for me. Jets and progression are not linked in any meaningful way My knowledge of carbs so far tells me that the idle jets control the off-idle progression? Not true? sportstergray
Lewis, Let us know how you get on, I've had simular quotes from 'NMS', I will be going to them soon, they have a good press & well recommended by most. I too am going through a simular decision (see : "dilemha on Carb Set-up" post. My Webercon Alpha ECU (2004) is based mapped for the Zetec but I'm running with a flat spot at 2000+ rmp, so I can either just have the carbs done or fit a 'TPS' & have the 'ECU' mapped at the same time. I would be interested in your comments. Gray:
Blatman
My knowledge of carbs so far tells me that the idle jets control the off-idle progression? Not true? Most progression issues seem to be because the butterflies aren't uncovering the progression holes at the same time, or too soon/too late for good progression from idle to load. In that instance, changing the jets won't help. If you are happy with butterfly position and progression hole uncovering etc etc, then changing the jets is the may well need looking in to if you are unhappy with the off idle fuelling... lewey
Jesus. That was almost a submission, albeit with gaping reservations.
Blatman
Well, not being a mind reader, I have no idea how familiar you are with carbs or progression issues, so I thought I'd cover my bases...
lewey
not being a mind reader My estimations of you have now deflated somewhat Blatman. That must make you human?
