congorobot Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Have done a search as to fitting daihatsu alt, & read many posts. Still have a few questions though, especially after looking at picture of one on ebay! Does the daihats one only have two mounting points? If so then will it not be subject to twisting on its mounts, (as no rear one)? If anyone has fitted one to a xflow the could they possibly post a pic, or send me one to davidlovegrove@blueyonder.co.uk Thanks. Quote
Tigger Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Yes they only have 2 mounting points and as far as I know, they don't suffer form any twisting. In fact mine is very solid - mounted to a VX. Not got a pic of one mounted to a Xflow but I'm sure somebody will be along soon with a pic or two. Tigger Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 Leon B, I must compliment you on the fitting - it looks very professional. Congorobot, it all hinges (geddit?) on the length of the lower mount and the thickness of the lower bracket to resist the turning moment from the belt tension. I fitted a Mitsubishi one from a Rascal using only two (of the three on this unit) and the casing cracked in quite a short time. Quote
Major Stare Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I have recently been thinking of fitting this alternantor to my X-Flow, simply as a weight saving exercise. Will the standard X-Flow belt fit the Daihatsu alternator? Quote
congorobot Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 I READ ON ONE OF BLATMAN'S PREVIOUS POSTS THAT HE HAS A CHARADE ALT ON A COSSIE ENG, AND USES A FIESTA BELT. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I'll be fitting one to my cossie (i had one fitted but took it apart and broke it) when i've got a new one. I tapped the standard pinto alt bracket to m10 and stuck a bolt in there, then made an adjustable support for the top bolt. Seems pretty solid but I have no idea how long it'll last. Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I have fitted an alternator from a suzuki SJ410 on my car a small alternator withoutthe massive price of the diahatsu one. Cost me £100 brandnew with surcharge. Barry Quote
neilb Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 They do look very similar to the corolla alternators but they have 2 mounting points, does anyone know the weight of these? Quote
Blatman Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 I have fitted an alternator from a suzuki SJ410 on my car a small alternator withoutthe massive price of the diahatsu one. Cost me £100 brandnew with surcharge. Barry Most I've ever paid for a Charade alternator is 80 quid That was a while ago now, to be fair, but it was about a tenner from the scrappies, and 60 quid plus VAT for a refurb at my local auto electrics specialist. It's the one I have on the Cossie (the one on the Vx is the 3 wire version, so there are small differences), however both will rev to well over 7000rpm, and neither have broken due to "twisting" forces. Being as they were designed to be mounted the way they are, I doubt they aren't able to adequately resist the twisting forces they encounter. The alternator won't know it's not on a Charade after all... Quote
Enterpryse Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 I came across a Bosch unit today which is physically smaller than the Lucas 18ACR and has the same bracket arrangments. Has anyone used one of these before. Sorry I didn't get the actual model number Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Leon B, I must compliment you on the fitting - it looks very professional. and looks so much like the set-up on display at SBD Quote
Enterpryse Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Any chance of a piccy? I'll take one at the weekend. The chap that owns/runs the local alternator/startermotor supply /repair emporium is getting one ready for me to trial fit on saturday. Quote
