felters Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 TomTom Go 300 from Amazon turned up today. Quite remarkable. Even a complete technical *uckwit like me had it plugged in and running in about 5 minutes. Then proceeded to try and confuse it on some of the smallest roads in deepest Hampshire and no dice. Steered me home every which way... see what it makes of the M6 Toll road next week. Quote
Fat Albert Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 I have Tom Tom Mobile on my phone, works a treat too and as I have my phone with me wherever I go I now have GPS Nav too Quote
Toby Mack Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 friend has one of these (on a HP palmtop thing). Very nice but not perfect. Does not know my postcode (confuses it with somewhere else in the town), you can't enter letters (ie 45a The Street) in the address and it reckons there is a garage in Hook in the middle of a housing estate. Still nice though Quote
ChrisG Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Albert, what phone do you have it on out of interest? I was looking into changing to a smartphone so I could run it rather than buy a PDA and use regular Tom Tom. Do you know how it compares to PDA Tom Tom feature wise? Quote
Fat Albert Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Chris Sorry about the slow response, this link has an independent review of the software with comparisons to competitors and Tom Tom on other devices. I changed to an Orange C500 (which uses Windows Mobile OS) to get the combination of phone and nav features. My previous phone was a Sony-Ericsson P800, after three months I wouldn't go back to a Symbian phone if you paid me. Windows Mobile is, for me, easier to use and the phone works in places others can't reach. I used to use a PocketPC PDA as well, now it just sits gathering dust. One tool for everything. Quote
V 8 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Yup, Orange SPV C500 for me also, crackin phone. In june Tom Tom mobile 5 is coming out. If you can wait you will save money on the new item rather than the additional £79 to upgrade from the current version Quote
ChrisG Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Cheers both, Im in no rush now as O2 seem to now have a policy of not offering upgrades before you reach 12 months on your contract even if you're prepared to pay so unless I want to run the ebay gauntlett Im probably stuck with my 7250 for now. Also, seeing as I have a Nokia bluetooth car kit i'd probably look to stick to a Nokia handset so I can also plug in the phone to charge it via the handsfree cable. The new 3230 looks good, but they are Symbian I believe - which you say is not as good? There are also a couple of other things that Id need to find out before purchasing, for example can you have the phone connecting to the bluetooth GPS and handsfree at the same time? Quote
Toby Mack Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 don't fall into the trap of thinking that all symbian based phones are the same. And symbian vs windows mobile is a bit like windows vs linux. YMMV! You might want to try one of the latest Nokias before making a decision. How about one of these for example? Very nice phone IMHO Quote
ChrisG Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Cheers Toby, it does look nice and not one Id noticed before but looking at the Orange site they have it listed for £80. The other problem seems to be that Tom Tom seem a bit slow on the uptake to confirm phone compatibility even though many smartphones work with the app. Quote
Toby Mack Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 £80 sounds quite cheap for such a nice phone Toby. ps. I guess I should admit to some bias here, I work for Nokia Quote
