gearbox in my Westfield

This is described as

2.8 sporting close 5 speed Ford gearbox with ratios 0.87, 1.0, 1.26, 1.81, 2.8 Heavy duty

This is from BGH Geartech

What sort of gear box is it?

It has a Burton q/shift gearlever kit. Is it possible to fit a reverse lock on this as it is all too easy to get reverse instead of first.

Back axle is Sierra 3.92

Sounds like a type 9 to me...

Andy

Thanks, is that good?

Well, your version certainly sounds better than the standard one. The Type 9 has more scope for upgrades in terms of ratios and the like (and it sounds like yours has been upgraded).

As Andy said it is a Type 9. Orginate's from a Sierra, but yours is a modified by BGH Geartech with a longer 1st gear. It's called a 2.8 Sporting Close, because BGH base the gearbox on the 2.8 ltr V6 version, not a 4 cylinder version.

Not a clue why they base it on v6 'box though...

Very good box to have, mine cost me £1K from BGH a couple of months ago, very happy............  :D

I thought it's a 2.8 sporting close, because of the 1st gear ratio?

I thought you could have close or sporting close, with heavy duty versions of both, with two choices of 1st gear, 2.8 or 2.6.

Richard, these are aftermarket boxes and quite sortafter. Basicly they are stronger and have a closer set of ratios, with 1st being a lot longer than standard. What engine is it hooked up to?

2.8 (IIRC) because BGH fit them with needle roller bearings (as on the original Type 9 for the 2.8 Capri)  --  allowing the box to handle more torque and more revs than the standard Type 9. There is a choice of three 'first' ratios (all much higher than the original) and three 'fifth's.

Mine are 2.75 - 1.75 - 1.26 - 1.00 - 0.84 and I'm very happy.

Price guide: ca. £1k (inc VAT) exchange  --  which is why they are quite sought after.

Same ratios as mine; but if I do ever get it rebuilt I might ask for a 2.66 1st instead

Thanks for all your prompt replies.

In my limited experience of driving the car first could probably be a little higher, apart from that its great especially 3 to 4. seethis site

Any comments on the reverse gear stop I so urgently need to stop myself reversing into people at the lights?

What engine is it hooked up to?

Its a 2.1 litre pinto with fuel injection, dyno'd at 164bhp at 6275 rpm, max torque 150ft lb at 5000rpm.

Big and heavy, not sure how this will affect the handling, but hopefully reliable!

The gearstick bolts in with 3 bolts. I suggest that you could make something that could use these bolts to attach to the gearbox to block the path to reverse with the gearstick. I have seen something done like this before but cant remember what it actually looked like.

If you have a quick shift fitted that uses an aluminium spacer between the gearstick and box, you could perhaps drill and tap a hole in its side to locate a stop bolt to achieve the same thing.

Sorry Martin

My type 9 had the same problem... I always selected 2nd first and then went straight forward to 1st... seemed to work :t-up:
