Another newbie checking in..

Firstly hello to all.

I just picked up an 87 Pre lit from someone i knew online in a moment of madness so will no doubt be picking brains on these very forums for the next few years (if you will have me! )

My mechanical experience has never extended much past the "what does this noise mean?" stage due to the fact i had a few friends i worked with who were into cars who would always just take over when situations arose.

Likewise i always chucked whatever cars i had into a local garage for servicing etc if i had to, but i have finaly started to fiddle myself now!!

So far i managed a full service on my main car, a swap over of a rocker cover gasket and and few clean outs of breather pipes etc.Due to these events i am now having to have counseling however as i began to sit bolt up right in bed covered in sweat in the early house screaming "SUMP PLUGS!!".

Are those things the work of the devil or what?!

Anyway, i will post a few pics up of the car i have and ask my first question.

The engine is a 1600 Vulcan crossflow with various tweaks tuned to about 1700cc.

Now on my return from collecting the vehicle there is evidence of oil on top of the rocker cover which can only be coming (i assume) from the oil filler cap.

The guy who sold it to me suggested that is not uncommon on tuned engines because they breath in such a way so will always leak a little.

The car does not really use any oil by all accounts and since owning the car he has never had to empty the oil catcher tank jobby, so my question is, is this normal and if so can i sort the problem?

Thanks in advance for any replys, here are a few pics, in fact you may even know the vehicle or the guy may post on these very forums! If so, hello Pezza ;)

Welcome aboard, nice looking car.

X-Flows do have a reputation for leaking oil. However, I'm sure there are way to get around this. Try doing a search (button at the top right hand corner) and see if that brings up anything useful.

Most of all, enjoy your new toy!

She shall be missed, check your evo driving mate put the wire mesh thingy back in the filler cap propperly boomer, he pulled it out when having a nose, it's always sprayed a tiny bit of oil out of there though.

Enjoy :D

Nice looking pre-lit and a good engine choice

:t-up:

As adhawkins has said, do a search on your oil problem, you WILL find an answer on here, it is easily sorted.

My only concern is your role bar, do another search, your safer option is an RAC bar.

Welcome aboard  :t-up:

Yep, I was gonna mention that too, but again didn't want his first response to sound too negative...

Hey i can handle any criticisms etc so feel free to suggest anything you like :)

Hello Pezz, had a feeling you may be around on these forums, i wasn't knocking your advice mate, i am still just in panic mode in relation to kit cars.Like i said to you on MSN, if my normal car made such noises i would assume it was f@#ked :D

Was just after opinions to see if anyone had a way of sorting out the small amount of escaping oil or if you just live with it due to the nature of the cars then so be it.

I will do a search anyway and have a looksie.

As for this £25, do i get a badge i can wear?, if so i am in! : p

Moving on, roll bars, what do you suggest then and where from? How in the hell you would roll one of these though i have no idea but if it's a good idea i will go with the experts.

I'm just in a big bad wobbly world of confusion at the moment as to what things fit on what cars, so direct links for my narrow body (shame i personaly have a rather wide body though! ) westy would be nice.

Also while i am on, i notice the front left wheel as you look at the car head on seems to have more of a camber than the right. Is that something to get sorted?.

I assume you can go to one of those balancing places that can adjust such things (toe in toe out etc?) I did try a search but didn't see much as i scanned quickly through.

Thanks for the warm welcome anyway everyone!

Pez..Have you replaced it with another Westfield?

Boomy. There are plenty of places proficient in checking sorting westfield suspension geometry for you depends where you are .

Playskool near bradford; Procomp (midlands); Northampton Motorsport to name just a few

He's in Kent...any ideas for places local to him? Was gonna mention the guys near us that operate out of (I think) Castle Combe, but not much point really :)

With regards to the oil problem, X-flow's like to breath.

You need one breather from the rocker cover, either from the cover itself or from the oil filler cap (see pic).

You also need a breather from the crank case.

Its hard to tell from your photo what you actually have!

Thanks for the comments everyone.

It would seem the ball joints may be worn on the front wheel, they certainly look more banana shaped than the ones on the opposite side anyway so that would explain the camber angle i would think. In fact, if you look at the second picture down i posted you can see the left wheel leaning in.The bottom ball joint is out of line with the top by quite some margin compared to the right hand wheel.

As for the oil filler cap etc i will look into that.I had a bit of a run yesterday and after fitting a spare rubber seal around the current cap there was no oil at all on the rocker cover when i got home.

That may or may not be anything to do with my rubber seal though.

I am going to take off all the wish bones and have them powder coated later on anyway so will probably replace the ball joints then.I assume the ones on the Westy main site fit straight on? When that is sorted out i will no doubt look into finding a geometry specialist.

I would also love a bigger fuel tank!!
